Hi All. I'm just starting to dive into dcc for my layout. I had gotten out of the hobby for a number of years but started up again about a year ago. Up to this point I've been using all my old dc stuff. I don't have a large layout, 10 x 12 around the room shelf, so I'm planning on going with a Digitrax Zephyr Xtra system. Money being an issue, as it always seems to be, I've only got the "fun money" to get the Zephyr and one or two decoders to start with. None of my locos are dcc or dcc ready, so they will need to be replaced. It's really no loss to me as they are mostly cheap Life-Like locos, but I do have a Manuta 4-6-2. It's a Prairie I believe, but don't hold me to that. I bought it in the late 80's and it has some sentimental value to me soI'd like to convert it to dcc. My long winded question is this; In your all's opinions, what would be the best decoder to put in this. I'm going to stay away from sound for now, but I as I get new locos they will be sound equipped. Also, being as how this will be the first decoder install I've ever attempted, how difficult is this and has anyone personally installed a decoder into a Mantua non dcc loco? I've done research online and it doesn't seem to be TOO complicated, but until I actually get into, I have no idea. Thanks all!

I'd try the Digitrax DH 123D. Cheap, and reliable. Two function only, which is all you need with a steamer anyway. Headlight and backup light. NCE and TCS also make entry level decoders close to the same price range, but since you're going with a Digitrax system, your dealer will probably have these in stock. $19.95 or less. I've found them in the $15.00 range.
