Has anyone ever tried using small battery powered LED lights for their crossing signals? I was hoping to avoid any more wiring to my layout, and thought just maybe there was a way to put some of these little LED's to work.
I'm going to say yes, its possible. I've seen those little 9V powered lighting set-ups for Christmas "villages" so...
It would be possible but probably not practical. You need a detection system that runs off 12 volts anyway so adding the 12 volt wiring for the crossing signals isn't much more work. Most detection systems have outputs for the crossing signals and you can set LED signals so they brighten and fade like incandescent bulbs or leave them behave like LED's if you're modeling the modern era.
