HO all the way!
I bought a couple of the older origional run grain hoppers the other day. These cars are junk! I realized at the time that they are serioulsy lacking detail, but I had a plan for that. I got em home and put on next to an Intermountain one I have and its almost 6 scale feet shorter!! So much for detailing these cars...back in the junk box they go...

I have a shock for you.Cylindrical hoppers come in several lengths and configurations. There are 2 bay,3 bay ,4 bay ,and even 5 bays. There are atleast 3 variations amongest these cars.

Oh and I also disagree with your junk comment. The Bachmann/Modelpower cars are trainset quaility, but it doesn't take much to make them look better.

By the way try buying a IM car for what the Bachmann/Modelpower cars sell for.

Catt's right. Not only are their lengths different, depending on bays, but also depending on what they carry will also make a difference in their heights. The denser the load, the shorter the height.

So just because they are Bachmann, doesn't mean they're junk. I took one of the old Tyco yellow UP gons, the ones cast in that god-awful yellow plastic, added ladders, stirrups and grabs, painted it into SRR colors and decaled it. Now its one of my better rebuilt cars.

So take some time on seeing how to improve the cars, strip and repaint/decal them. Put some good trucks under them, and you'll fine that for not a lot of work, you've now got some classie cars for the layout.
