Walk into LHS the other day to discover a just set out box of NOS Athearn BB engines and took the liberty of releiving the owner of the following:

Union Pacific
GP9
SD9 (2 power, 1 dummy)
U28C (1 power, 1 dummy)
F7 A/B (power, dummy)
PA1/PB1 (power, dummy)

Southern Pacific
SD45 (1 power, 1 dummy)
H24-66 Train Master

CNW
C44-9W

Santa Fe
FP45

Went back into today to see what was left and pick up some couplers and wheel sets I ordered, other than a few orphan dummy B units, they was gone so I got lucky I guess. Someone's collection or something, all were NOS, some had the details already installed, the rest will be my first modeling projects I guess having never put any together so far. All are flywheel drive with the exception of the PA1/PB1 set. I'll post up pics as i go through them. Got a few motor mounts to replace at the very least on the oldest ones so I ordered enough to do them all if needed.

The humble GP9...

First kit build, this was one of the NOS, still have to paint the railings, after a complete tear down and cleaning, it runs pretty smoothly, very quiet.

Runs smooth, very quiet?
You sure you got an Athearn there? :D
That's a good haul you brought in!

The CW44 makes up for it, bad counter weights or the shaft is bent, real howler. Most the engines are what you would expect though, not the best slow speed performers, not the quietest, but acceptable.

Quick question from someone new to modeling forums. What does NOS mean? I did some hunting first in case it was an easy find but still not sure; does it mean New Old Stock?

The beginnings of my UP passenger service

Blue Box F7A/B combo, Streamlined Coach cars and R.P.O. in UP colors (labeled pool cars on box, I claim ignorance, going to be UP when I get done with them)

Some railroads would paint some of their passenger equipment in other railroads' paint schemes (like UP) so everything would match when it was in a train. At that time, railroads were very image conscious.

I also snagged power/dummy sets in Southern pacific, an FM Trainmaster set and a U33C, and then today I snagged an SD-40-2 in a wierd SF theme, think swoosh but red and yellow with a black roof, friend said it was a proposed scheme for a merger that never happened between the AT&SF and SP. Post up some pics later.

Back in the middle 80's Santa Fe and Southern Pacific were in the process of merging to be come the SPSF RR, but it was turned down. But, not after both RR's had painted a lot of locos in that scheme.
That paint scheme was given the nickname "Kodachrome", but it was also called by some "Shouldn't Paint So Fast".

Thanks for the info, fleshes out what my friend told me a bit more. If my online research is a accurate looks like I need yellow handrails with black stanchions, so off to the hobby shop.
