Athearn repower questions

Has anyone ever tried to repower an Athearn GPXX-2 with an Atlas GPXX drive train? I have three failed projects (Atlas GP38/GP40 chassis) which I would like to use to power three DRGW GP40-2's, Athearn of course. Before I go tearing into these chassis, I would like to hear other's experiences.
 
Are these blue box Athearns? If so, it might be possible but you'd be looking at ripping everything out of the Athearn chassis right down the the frame and rebuilding it with Atlas parts. You'd need to adapt the Athearn trucks to the Atlas gear towers and then mount the motor and drive train so everything lined up. It's certainly possible but it wouldn't be easy. I'd buy one of the many Athearn repowering kits available with a new can motor before I tried that project. If the motors and drivetrains are still good on the failed Atlas projects, why not just get some new Atlas shells?
