Not for sure exactly which section I should put this in, so I decided here.

I am looking at possibly getting some Athearn engines and wondering what they mean by DCC Ready w/wiring harness? Does that mean that you would need to wire and solder a decoder in it or does it have a connector in it?

I see others with the quick plug connection, but some engines that I want to get say the DCC Ready w/wiring harness, and just want to know what I am getting myself into with that setup before I purchase them. I am somewhat new to DCC so I am learning on the fly.

Thanks
Brad

The ones that are DCC Ready have a 9 Pin JST plug that allows you to take a decoder with a 9 pin plug and plug it into the locomotive. All you have to do is remove the shell of the locomotive, remove the jumper plug that is attached to the "female" side of the DCC ready harness and plug in the 9 pin JST equipped harness. These locomotives will also accept a 8 pin decoder. You just have to remove the jumper and plug in the 8 pin decoder into the 8 pin pre-wire adapter.

Its easy. Trust me, I was just as new and confused 2 years ago by DCC.

As stated by the last two posters....it means installation in 2 minutes, providing the shell cooperates.
