Athearn genesis challenger

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Nope, and don't get it because it has an MRC in it, and they sound horrible! Stay away!!!

I think that, generally, the steam models that Genesis markets are quite well received, but the sound-equipped ones have been hit and miss, and the misses have been awful for their owners. If you care to get one on sale, perhaps even as DC, no sound, you would probably enjoy the model, particularly if you were able to mount a QSI Revolution in it, perhaps a Tsunami.

I have several Tsunamis, and I have enjoyed them. I think, though, that the QA or QR's are the cat's pj's. I just got a used BLI ATSF 4-8-4 from a guy who does custom painting and decoders installations for a well-known DCC website, into which he had installed a Quantum Revolution. Holy Crap!!! It sounds incredibly realistic.

The tsunami I TRIED to install in my genesis bigboy has made me bald! I was hoping the challenger had a tsunami in it. :( Oh well, that's out of the question then, I will not try to do another install again.

Why not get the engine, and send it to Tony's Train Exchange, or a fellow I know who might be willing to install it? If the engine is important, a few extra dollars would be worth having it...at least, that is how I have been oriented to the hobby. We only have so much disposable income, and once priorities are set, allocating funds is straightforward. :D

I yanked the MRC out of my Genesis Challenger the first chance I got, about an hour or two and a multi meter and i had a Tsunami in it!

I must have messed something up. The darn thing won't even pull itself up the 2% grade on the layout. I even tried putting a helix humper in it. I believe I have a diode that is wrecking things.

Well, is it a voltage-to-the-motor problem or is it a weight problem, or a weight distribution problem, or binding in the works? Again, these are all correctable, if hard to pin down. Your decoder outputs should tell you what voltage DC is going to the motor at half throttle, which should read near 8 volts DC. If that checks out, then there's something else going on, and I would bet it is part of the drive, bushings and wipers at the wheels/axles, or rods needing some tweaking.

Yikes! My Genesis Challenger pulls everything you put behind it! I have had it haul 40 plus cars at NMRA weight standards up 3 and 4 percent grades, and it doesnt even break a sweat! If you would like a Tsunami installed, I could lend a hand.
