A friend and myself has been building my layout and it is going great, but I'm stumped on if I should put foam over the layout or put cork and track down and then build up around it with foam???

By putting foam down would be easier making rivers and lakes,or ponds.

Thanks for your help.

Yep. It doesn't even have to be something as major as a lake or river, just small dips in the ground will help to break up the monotony of a perfectly flat surface. You can use a Surform or rough sand paper.

I used the 1" thick pink styrofoam...but I am modelling a prarie theme so I wont be having any big gorges or anything. There is 2 places where I will have bridges about 10" off the ground, but for that I have dropped my benchwork accordingly to make it all work when I get around to doing scenery...
Alot of guys use 2" thick foam and I thought about doing that, but if you plan on using under table switch machines then you will not have a very realistic throw on the switch points with a sub base that thick...
