Has anyone remotored either the AHM/Rivarossi 4-6-2 pacific or the 2-8-2 Mikado using the NWSL 2027 motor?
I'll be doing this on my mike to improve its performance in the near future.
Also will be converting it to DCC simply (I hope)by isolating the motor.

I remotored a 2-6-6-2. I used a NWSL motor on it. I went to a larger motor(larger magnets and can) to increase torque for larger trains. It also raised the amp draw to the point that I had to use a larger decoder.

A friend had another 2-6-6-2 that he regeared in lieu of a motor change. I do believe that his engine runs better than mine. And he didn't toast two decoders like I did before I found my problem.

Another thing you may want to look into is a set of traction wheels. I have a Rivarossi 2-8-8-2 that has pulled 239 cars. It's counterpart(sans the traction wheels) could only tug about 75 cars. I don't know what kind of performance you are looking for, but that Mallet is for real.

Over the years, I have re-motored several, first one for myself and then others. I have used everything from a Sagami 2027, to a Cannon Coreless 2030.

Forgot to mention, I even turned the flanges down on some to allow for use on code 70 rail.

What are your thoughts on the coreless motors vs can motors.
From what I've read the coreless motors are much better though more expensive...

Definitely the coreless motors are superior to a plain can motor. They are much more efficient, and as you have said, more expensive. I have a couple of Escap coreless motors, and they even have a built in "flywheel" effect, meaning they keep turning a time after the power is cut.

One caution, do not run a motor like this on a dcc system without a decoder! The motor will overheat very quickly and burn out!
