Another installment in the series: "It was so ugly I had to model it." Actually, CP Rail 5448 was much uglier, but I didn't have a non-dynmaic brake shell, so I went with 5449. Which isn't really ugly, just sort of, well, plain.

I need to finish the weathering (including that bare spot underneath the horn), add the numberboards and pilot.

The unit goes with CP Rail 5447, seen behind in the first photo below. Prototype photos of 5449 and 5448 are also below; they come from the Canadian Pacific Railway Diesel Locomotive Roster website at http://www.trainweb.org/galt-stn/

What's the story behind those two locomotives. It looks like they got as far as beng primered and then got put on the road. They really are as nasty as I've ever seen on a mainline locomotive. Nice model, BTW, even if it is ugly. :)

5449 started as DRGW 5402. It was wrecked and sold to NRE, then rebuilt and leased to CP Rail as NRE 5402. CP Rail bought it in 1994 and re-numbered it to 5449. It was relettered for CP Rail's subsidiary STLH in 1998 (as were 5447 and 5448). None of the three were ever painted into any CP Rail scheme--they stayed in primer.

As for 5447, it started life as CNW 6910 before being wrecked and rebuilt by NRE. 5448 was T & P 8311, then MP 3130. It was also wrecked and sold to NRE.
