that entire railroad is like a model. full of tunnels and viaducts, extreme grades and curves.

I would hazard a guess that the grade is in the order of 4-6%. Very nice stonework viaduct!

Wow, that would be a fun road to model. :)

Reminds me of a site near where I live, Circle City. The railroad circled around there to make up the height difference. Most of it's gone now but you can still see the grade cut into the hills. http://www.ghosttownsusa.com/circlec.htm
