An attempt at Painting

I bought a couple of their small Bottled Paints and really liked them. In so far as the Air Brush goes, I have always used Badger ModelFlex Paints. Acrylic, low odor and they flow and cover pretty good as well :) They also have Rail Road Colors to boot ;)
I've used the Microlux paint Micro Mark and happy with the results. They just have weathering colors, but came in handy when others were out of stock.

I am surprised that Tamiya isn't available in the UK ........... darn and as you said, I can't even send you any for the reasons you stated.
Oh it is, but not in spray can's at least not any that I can find, but little bottles yeah, plenty of them.
You are not allowed to send any pressurized can on an airplane. Surface transportation only. Our company had to pay a hefty fine when an idiot shipping clerk sent a can of spray paint via air freight. We only got caught because the box broke open and the can rolled out! Idiot got reprimanded because he signed off on the specific training that covered that very matter.

The "Tammy" paints airbrush quite easily, especially with their thinner. Perhaps worth going that route if painting is an important part of your creative effort. AsI I don't always want to snake a hose upstairs to the studio from the shop below, a 5 gallon air cylinder, which I fill from the compressor works fine with an air regulator. These can be easily filled at a gas station where air is available and provide sufficient air for a reasonable air brush session. The number of paints and effects possible open up considerabley!
Using Isopropyl Alcohol instead of Tamiya's own thinner is a much more cost effective way of thinning Tamiya's paints for spraying (and brushing!)

A great product I use is Winsor & Newton's Galleria varnishes, water based and great to spray with, but also dry level when brushed

For a quick spray varnish I use Vallejo's range, well worth the money and the closest to how Dullcote used to be

I've been moving further and further away from specific modelling ranges of top coats for a good while now, preferring to use products marketed to the art world, which are essentially the same product, but cost a hell of a lot less

Agreed - so many so called hobby specialists are doing very little other than exploiting the hobby and it's members, woodlands is a good example of that. So many things can be bought from every day stores - Art Store, Hardware Store etc that do the same job as these so called specialist hobby products for a far far lesser cost as you said.

Unfortunately it is the "new comers to the hobby" that get caught out and pay for their naivety of the hobby. :(

I've used Isopropyl with the Tammy paints, but a small jug or their thinner lasts for a very long time! I think I get fewer clogs and buildup on the airbrush externals as the Tammy Thinner dries a little less quickly? I babe used the Golden art acrylics for years and mixed my own paints for ship models, but hate recreating a particular color after I run out if a touchup is needed.

Currently I am using the Tru Color paints in RR colors which airbrush nicely out of the bottle.

We all flounder about and arrive at something that works for us! Regards: tom

Certainly agree re the thinner longevity, though I go through a lot of IPA in lots of modelling situations so couldn't do a comparison. I've not used Golden's products, the seemed to be quite hard to find here in the UK for a while but seems to be improving.

Tru-Color paints are fantastic, easily the best I've used of any range

Absolutely! When painting rolling stock - I think I prefer Tamiya Spray - quicker, cleaner and quieter and NO clean up afterwards. I have an Iwata Air Brush and Compressor which I use when painting batches of kits as it is finer and dries quicker than Tamiya. As said, I used Modelflex Airbrush Paint, thinned a little with Testors Aztek Thinners as well as a wetting agent (can't think of the proper name but it keeps the paint wet a little longer so it doesn't dry too quickly.

Correct for an individual, but a company is allowed to import them as long as all the safety regulations and notices concerning their transportation are carried out.

Tamiya Spray Paint Spay cans I recently found, seem to be only available through Amazon, although there are probably others, but I have no interest in using them, also at £12 for 100ml not sure their worth the price.

I have my Vellejo paints, 3 airbrushes, and now a proper compressor, I don't do a lot of painting anyway, so I'm happy with what I have.

I don't have many Tamiya cans left, though I picked up a Hull Red from Wonderland Models in Edinburgh a few weeks back, I paid less than £7 for it

If you are looking in future, look at the general model shops in your area (if you haven't already!)

Tend to agree with you Dave. A bit hard when you need to order the stuff on line - you don't get to check anything, another problem with online buying unfortunately.

I also checked for Use By Dates - butthere doesn't appear to be any. Stuff stamped on the bottom of the cans BUT, all over lapping making it impossible to read anything - wonderful!

This is one out of a 6 can batch I bought earlier this year. Looks like the lot will be in the garbage and I'll just buy Krylon Matte Clear or similar. Dullcote was so good BEFORE rustoleum got hold of it :(

What about the ambient conditions in which you were painting?

I had a similar bad experience with spray can Testors clear flat. I spray it outdoors, or if need be, in my garage. I recently sprayed in acceptable weather (better than what I had with many successful sprayings), just outside my garage, and the paint appeared to go on well, but it dried to a translucent yellow white with a rough texture.

Turns out, I had taken a large rug out to the driveway a couple of days before, targeted for discarding. But before I got it up in my truck bed, it rained, soaking the rug. It was too heavy to move wet, and rolled out flat, just a couple of feet from where I had set up to spray.

It was a HUGE humidity source, messing up evaporation, and resulted in solvent entrapment on steroids.

Fortunately, I was able to reclaim the cars with some 99% isopropyl alcohol. When the rug dried out enough to lift and was hauled away, I set up and painted again, and have had no further issues. I also dug out and keep handy my temperature and humidity sensor.

Mmm, I don't think the weather played apart. I sprayed outside when it was in the mid to high 70's with (supposedly) low humidity. The paint went on well, was just the dullcote that messed up for some reason. Humidity was a good thought though :D👍
