Lionel has been in the business of making toy & later model trains for over a century. While the company ownership & engineering has changed, the mission really stays the same. Sell products, grow the market. And I'll argue in the first years of PC & Computer/Video games simply survive. AND the market has shifted as well, still entry/toy trains sold. And a trend for true model railroading... MTH & Lionel survivors of a 25 year shake out 
So what's the best "entry level" offering? Just an opinion, but I think those sets wrapped around the Lionel FT's are for a variety of reasons. Hence the video "opinion" with a little look back at years past entry level offerings
