3-pole motor with DCC?

Thanks for the detailed answer. To me, and considering I am not going to be hauling 15 or 20 cars, the most important thing to me is that the majority (if not all) are 5 Pole Motors, all are good but some better than others. This puts an end to my concerns about what motor (pole wise) I might get in an engine.

I am becoming even more attracted to the Kato engines too, so looks like that is a good choice all round.

Mark, one engine that infamously had a three pole motor was the N scale F59PHH from Athearn. I remember there was at least a couple of others, mostly steam engines, that, for one reason or another came with three pole motors.
