John also you did check your filters ? and the blower motor could be failing running to slow or dust and crude have got on the inside of the A coil If the guy with the R22 has a endoscope camera he can see the inside of the coil to make sure its clear just a couple things to think about
I've never seen a completely sealed system Anyway yes it can be repaired if the leaking spot can be accessed and yes you are correct the A coil is inside normally above the furnace unless it's a downdraft

As for the Rit dye you have to heat it till it's dry or it won' work as well
And I did run a large magnet thru it several times and found nothing the pict I showed the ballest was not glued down
