#9908 was the last Burlington Zephyr "shovel nose" built. It was also one of the first to utilize the A-1-A power truck, later used on E-units (they use two trucks). The problem with the "shovel nose" from #9900 through 9908 was the cab was close to the ground and provided very little protection for the crew in the event of a collision, as happened to two other units of this type. The Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Engineers lobbied hard and the result was the elevated cab and projecting nose of the cab units.
