Train Recovery Mechanic
hello all,
i am yet another nameless faceless new guy.
i had a small n scale set up about 15 years ago that was a disaster. i dumped everything and gave up. well i am much older now,(52), and have the internet for info and help. i have purchased most of my track and am getting back all my train stuff i sold to a coworker. i am going to scrap the board and layout and just keep the trains, controller and what ever i can salvage from the switches.
and like my other hobby,(firearms), I see it is a hard time to get certain items. i am using altas n scale code 80 track. i got everything i think i need other than flex track, good luck there i am finding out. and small sections and bumpers.
i am in the northern shenandoah valley in Virginia and i work for the DC metro subway system as an emergency train recovery mechanic.
over the years and especially when i started there in 1983 i was fortunate to have worked with a lot of actual old time railroad guys. i had the privilege to ride homemade rail inspection cars from winchester Va up to hagerstown, md and around the area.
so i am going to be asking a lot of dumb questions which i did not have the chance to ask the first time around. so please go easy on the new guy. i promise to read as much as possible here before asking some questions so i do not get the ,"why don't you read this" responses everytime!

thanks in advance,

gary

Welcome to the Forums! You'll find this to be the best and friendliest model railroading site there is. It's pretty rare that anybody gets their panties in a bunch.;) To help get up to speed you can check out Model Railroad Hobbyist http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/ This is a FREE magazine put out once a month on the internet with lots of good articles and tips.

I had a couple of N scale layouts that never got past the "Plywood Pacific" stage, the last being in 1989. Searched the web for model railroads and found this site. Well, because of the folks here, I've started spending money on new stuff (it's all so much better than the old) and going to train shows, buying a DCC system and decoders and I've even put together a couple of kits! Yep, a lot of people here to lead you down a wayward path!!!:D:p:p I was lucky in that I've got about 150' of Atlas code 55 flex track but not very many of their extremely rare turnouts. Hopefully time will cure that.

Enjoy the time you spend here and don't be bashful!

thank you for the greeting. well i was able to find 5 pieces of flex today. gotta pick it up thursday morning. i needed 8 for my layout so i guess i am 90" short. so i am left to order a box of bulk 5' i guess.
also gonna pick up my lumber when i can borrow the neighbors pick up truck. hopefully this weekend. gives me a few days to clear the space.
