I'm working on a new layout and I ran into a room issue so to solve the problem I need to run a conveyor for my cement plant over or under the mainlines of my layout. My question: do railroads allow industry to run conveyors over the mainline or even under them? To get the loading facility and silos of the cement plant to work I need to run the conveyor from the plant crusher to the silos over the tracks. Would this be a so far fetched that it will look silly or will I be ok to do this on the layout. I know it is just a model so I can do what I want but since it is over the mainlines I want to try to model it real.

there is a large cement and aggregate plant in Buffalo Iowa that has multiple conveyors and such over the main and the road.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I'm ok to do as I wanted.

Steve - Great photo, do you have more of the plant? I would like to see if so.

Dave

Thank you Steve. I must say I do see some great photos that I can find useful. Funny what kind of picture a model railroader would look at and say is a great photo. Others would look at it and say WTF are you looking at. That photo must be a mistake. LOL

Thanks,
Dave

Actually, you're the owner of the railroad and you can do whatever ya want. You're also the chairman of the board of the environmental commission of your railroad world and you can do whatever ya want there too. Heck, you even have the authority to establish the constitution and bill of rights for your railroad world.

Now that is my way of thinking!

The coal breakers in Pennsylvania's anthracite country had conveyors going over roads-highways and rails-all the time. So there is no reason for you to not run conveyors if you need them.

I plan to have an enclosed [dummy] viaduct over my main line that links my steel mill to the "outside" world, i.e. the off-layout part of the mill complex.

Hi Ken, How have you been? Hope all is well and I would love to see some photos of your steel mill. I'm sure you have more done then I had done since I stopped modeling for a few years.

Dave
