Hey good question, I have the IH truck waiting to be finished!
Military modellers usually have some tricks up their sleeve, I’ll be watching for answers.

Here's how I do it. I use Microscale's Micro Krystal Klear.

A couple of examples of that particular model.

It's a tricky process where you get a dab of the MKK on a toothpick, and spread it out over the opening, and "stretch" it across the windshield. It dries clear and you can trim off any excess if there is any. For openings as large as this, you sometimes have to work with it a bit. Practice on a scrap piece of styrene with different sized holes cut into it.
The material is very similar to Elmer's White Glue or Aleene's Tacky Glue, and may very well be the same stuff. The glue is much cheaper. I bought the MKK years ago before I realized that it was probably the same stuff.

Here's a simple video of the process. I am sure that there are others.

Good luck.

Thanx Willie!
I saw a video once of a guy taping over the windshield of an N scale truck and filling it with MKK from the inside, HO might be trickier?
I think I actually have some somewhere, maybe I’ll experiment with that and tacky glue.
