ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.
Depends on what you like. You can fit more trains in a small space in N. You can see them better in HO. If you want long trains running long distances, go for N. If you want a couple spurs and a switcher, or you have a whole basement, go for HO.
All your choice man. Hang out at the hobby shop, see what calls to you...
HO is the most popular, and has the largest variety of equipment available.
N is second most popular of the "modeling" scales (ie not toys). N won't have detail as fine as HO due to manufacturing limits, but you can fit more stuff into the space available.
This is the age old question of whether you want quality (HO) or quantity (N). If you want both, you can do 2-rail O scale (where you would need a whole basement just for a switching layout)
It really depends on available space and the level of scale detail that you want. Generally, the larger the scale the better the detail. N scale has come a long way in recent years and seems to be gaining a lot of momentum as scale detail is improving along with better product selection. I personally feel that HO scale is the best overall compromise in regards to scale detail and space requirements. With that being said you can have a great experience with any scale and no one scale is the best for every model train enthusiast. The best place to start would be to determine how much space you have available for a layout. Also, you may want to get in touch with any local model train clubs and find out what scale(s) they support.
To which "experts" do you refer?
You may get as many answers as there are modelers of each scale.
The choice depends on lots of factors:
space available
eye sight
coordination
preference of scale
cost factors
HO is more common, but N scale takes up less room.
HO tends to be cheaper than N scale as it is more popular. For those with budget limitations, HO can be an alternative.
HO is larger in size and for some with limited eyesight or manual dexterity is the better choice.
N scale can be a better choice for those with limited space available for a layout.
Finally, preference is the choice each "expert" modeler will make when choosing between the two.
experts? well, I sure am an expert and I must say I prefer my morning eggs sunny side up. as the matter of fact i cannot imagine anyone preferring their egs in any other way.
wait a minute. oh sorry, i must have misread the thread topic. since its the best sandwich we talking about, the preferred one is definitively PBJ. all these "ham and cheese" guys don't know squat.
