What is this hopper car?

Its just a Covered hopper and that type of car would most likely carry Grain, Corn, Animal feed, Barley, Etc. Judging from the unloading chutes its doubtful it would carry plastic pellets though. Also the real one has round roof hatches not the trough style.

Agreed. These types of modern hoppers will also transport potash, prilled ammonium nitrate, other dry/pelletized fertilizers and chemicals that won't oxidize the internal surfaces of the hopper.

I just went with the no Hazmat placard on the car to give it a quick commodity list. I know Ammonium Nitrate, Certain Fertalizers, Chemicals require a Hazmat Placard.

That could be for a number of reasons: the condition of the car, its internal construction, and others. Things come and go in the railroad world. Cars get reassigned, modified, restricted, embargoed.....

Agreed and keep in mind that if you watch an industry long enough you will notice the same cars coming and going. Most cars are in a semi captive service and go back and forth from point a to point b. At least that is what I noticed on the RR I work for.

where im from we call these "greybellies". To further advance my railroad cliff clavin-ness, i am curious to know exactly how you distinguish between covered hoppers that haul edables (grain, corn etc) and hoppers that haul plastic pellets - besides the flock of birds i sometimes see following a corn load...

Covered hoppers used for transporting chemicals and plastic pellets have round hatches, those used for grain and other edibles have oval or trough hatches. As far as I know the hatch types are never mixed. There will be one or the other.

Thats one of the things BUT cars used for grain , feed, etc have different dump chutes then say a car made for Powders like Cement or Flour and plastic pellet cars usually have pipes so hoses can get hooked up to them to suck the pellets out as believe it or not Plastic Pellets are deamed a hazardous spill if they leak on the ground and the RR has to call a truck to come vacuum them up. Such as with this incident.

Hello there!

Wow! I was expecting only two or three replies :p!

Thanks to all!

I just wanted to know because I'm keen on purchasing one or two of it for my layout and needed to know as I'll have some industries placed near the tracks, if you know what I mean:rolleyes:.

Anyway, thanks again!
