This has probably been discussed already. I just could not find the answer I was looking for in the search engine. What is the best weight ratio for n scale rolling stock as a rule of thumb. A lot of them seem to light to me for lashing up anything lengthy.
I tend to leave my Micro Train stuff stock weight and pull shorter lengths with those due to their rarity/value on some of them.

The rule does not apply to engines, of course! Engines are going to be much heavier, and within reason, heavier is better. A heavy engine will usually have more pulling power than a light one, and some modelers go to great lengths to add weight to engines.
