Made another trip up to Mainline Hobbies, Blue Ridge Summit, PA today.
Had to pick up some decoder stuff then a BLI UP switcher found its way onto the pile of stuff along with another Walthers auto rack.

Strange how stuff you had no intention of buying seems to magically appear when you get to the checkout. :D

I'm going crazy because I went to a swap meet today. They let you fill a brown paper bag for $9. $9!!!! I picked up all of this in my bag. 50 total peices. Crazy deal for a guy who is just amassing his collection. Time to put Kadees on everything😅

Very nice haul you managed to get, you may want to swap out the wheelsets for metal ones too.

You don't have to swap all the couplers now, you could just swap out one coupler for the locomotive and leave the rest for a time when your budget has a bigger cash flow, horn hooks do work together.

Went to a club that was hosting a swap meet. Went a bit later in the duration of the event and I guess I was collecting the remainders in my bag. Pickins were probably slim for the average model railroader but, for a guy like me who is just starting out, it was nice to get to build a little empire
If you don't know, the engines you got are:
AHM/Yugoslavia SW1 (Southern)
Tyco SD24 (the mountain)
Life Like F7 (Amtrak)
Tyco C430 (SP&S)
Now, when you try them to see if they work, you'll know what they are if you need to ask for help/parts.

Looks like you got 4 loco's too, if they're runners, (even badly) it's definitely a steal for you.

I'll send you a list for next time. 🤣 🤣
So far only the Southern switcher worked as it was. I need to go in and do some investigating on what is the deal with the others. I also bought an SP ALCO PA with 5 Daylight cars on eBay so my "workbench"(theoretical workbench), is pretty full. That along with KD swapping the couplers and fixing other bits and bobs that need to be worked on. I'm excited about the challenge though! In HS I took as many of the shop electives as I could so I am handy with woodworking, small engines, welding, 3D modeling, etc. The only thing I haven't really touched is electric work so hopefully this can give me some experience in that.

There were so many project locos that were in the bins. I can't imagine how many there were before I got there. I only picked up the ones I liked. I am sad I missed out on a B&O PA-1 AB set. A guy took it right when I decided to go back for it

Adding the SP PA I have a total of 5 on my workbench so far. Happy to report that only 1 of them ran out of the box and that was the Southern switcher. The couplers on that loco are a bit low however so I will need to tweak that at some point. The past few days I have been working on them and so far I have been able to get the SP&S working well. The Mountain Line loco had a stripped gear so I ordered a bulk gear lot online and am hoping one of those will fit. The Amtrak F unit had cracks in both of the prices that connect the driveline to the motor and output so unless I find that part, that engine is going to sit for a while. Finally the PA seems to be the strangest one. It does not like slow speeds and it stalls constantly on the track. I can't figure it out yet but I dont want to give up on it since I have recently fallen in love with the way the Alco PAs look. So mixed bag but I will keep working on the ones that need help.

This may have various causes, dirty wheels or contacts, loose wiring, a bad solder joint, worn motor brushes, or a combination of any or all of the above, plus I know I've missed out a few.

Welcome to the joys of MRR
Yeah quite fun! it is a fun challenge to get these locos working. Most of them just need a good cleaning and they work like new.
