The S gauge is very popular with older generation of American modelers. Think "half of 1 gauge". There are new models in that scale (1:64), and they are very nice and well detailed. It seems that the S gauge is becoming more popular as the years go by.
Its too bad that there is not more of a selection in S. Though, its probably a good thing, as I could see myself going to that scale in a few years.
thnx for the explanation. so i have to go for a S Big Boy then? because i "only" have: Z, N, H0, 0 and soon 1

never saw S Scale

where in the world is this "common" ?
Scale ie. HO, OO, TT refers to how many times (in any direction) you would need to place a model, in HO 1:87 you would need 87 models to attain the actual length of the same 1:1 locomotive, same for width and height.
Gauge refers to the width of the rails the model will run on, HO and OO use the same width track, but the models are different scale 1:87 and 1:76 respectively.
And if you think that's confusing try this.

I have noticed it's increase in popularity at train shows that I get to.
Bought a few things the other day online and they came in yesterday. The fleet of 60' high cube boxcars is getting a bit more prototypical with more yellow. I do like the opera window style centerbeams also.
A couple more 60' high cube box cars from Walthers' new run
Centerbeam flat car (Union Pacific)
Centerbeam flat car (Trailer Train)

They ain't brown in my neighborhood, but a very dusty gray from the gravel roads. I know that UPS does everything on the cheap, and they never wash their trucks! At least they're talking about getting air-conditioning in some of them.

S Gauge was only made by American Flyer when I was a kid. I had a 4x8 sheet of plywood with legs that my dad made (I was around 7) and I ran an O-27 Lionel around the table, it got boring real fast. My older brother (20 years older than me) was moving to Texas and he gave he his American Flyer train comple with risers making a figure 8. My dad had to make a much bigger table for that. It was fun until my brother wanted his train back and I went to HO gauge then...I was around 12 by then. I stayed in HO; but went to HOn3 and back to HO when I finally moved into a house with a basement. I'm 80 now and have been playing with trains for over 70 years off and on
Got this off Ebay the other day. Think I may need to replace the wheels on one truck since it seems to stick a bit, but otherwise in great shape. I wanted to start getting stuff for modeling an older era besides the modern era that I have the most things for currently. Gives me a good reason to get a SD40-2 for Santa Fe or Burlington Northern.

These items should arrive within a week.
I purchased the Banta, Red Mountain Freight kit from Crazy Model Trains. Great prices and the owner was super nice to deal with.
The trailer came from an E-bay vendor.

Traded a Lionel 5500 Conrail SD60M for a Set of Williams Sharks

S-scale seems to run a cycle. In the early 1990s there were several new vendors that entered the market. I thought "Now" it will come back. It didn't. They all vanished.
But, to the topic of the thread. Atlas just announced a new run of the U28CG. In 3 of the 4 Santa Fe paint scheme's. Don't know what I am going to do. I can't afford 6 new locomotives.
Buying Powerpole crimper and connectors. As part of converting original 5x11 to DCC, I added connectors between the two sections. After practice, I now have the tool and knowledge for the proposed extension.
I also added house wiring outlets for lights and layout, and made a table for the new electronics.

I have to assume you are at least getting one? or is there some sarcasm in that comment.....lol?
I picked up some bus wire last week and a new crane. I was going to build one like some of you did, but it was ready and put up for sale pretty close so I jumped at it. Outer hook is on mine, but not shown in this ebay picture.

No sarcasm. I realized they won't be delivered until spring of next year so I can save up. I have ordered 5. Two each of the passenger schemes, and 1 of the freight. Need a 3rd number on the silver trucked passenger scheme.
Lasy saturday i went to the train show in Kutztown, Pa:
This was the last one this year, but for anyone living in the Allentown/Reading area, I recommend this show. Picked up this coal loader for only 2$. According to the seller it came from donations to the club;
I figured it should go ok with an older style brick roundhouse. Still have to find a water tower, and a wooden one will also be best with the wooden coal tower. I'll have to make some modifications to that coal chute, since it's in lowered position and steam locomotive will not ride under it. Other than that it's already slightly weathered and ready to put on the layout...I'm not cheap, only frugal

I'm not sure if a Big Boy was made in 1:64 scale. I know a Challenger was made, my friend has one.
