The drivetrain is not exactly the same, but it uses a quality can motor, the same one used in the Proto 2000 locomotives. Sometimes you can get those trainline locos dirt cheap to scrap them for driveline parts.

As you said, the motor is a decent quality, but the drive live is not the same. It took very little work for me to get the locomotive to run extremely smooth and quiet. Very pleased with the results. With out this little switcher being available I would had to spend double or more, and possibly even do a custom paint job on it.
