I have just read that Sylvan Scale Models has pushed a Great Lakes Ore Boat made exclusively for Walthers is due June 1st, 2009!! The boat measures 36" long (258' scale feet) and 6" wide!! It is designed for use with the Walthers Hulett Ore Unloader and Ore Dock kits. If a longer ship is desired, one can also purchase a add-on kit that includes a hull and deck section that can be added to the center of the ship to further lengthen the model. This kit is due June 15th, 2009.

The boat is not cheap, but man is it a BEAUTIFUL model!! Ill be ordering these when they come out to go with the steel series!!!

Check it out!!!

Man you would need to devote some real estate for that setup. Nice looking ship though.

Trying to find a non-bashing way to say this, but dude, the great lakes are fresh water. Still, I understand the statement, and I too would love to have both that much space, and that much time and money to be able to have that much water.

You don't need an ocean, all you need is about a 12" width of water to float that boat.

I've had that model for ~7 years, and all I need to hold it is an 8" shelf of fake water.

Theres also a company known as Bearco Marine Models that has their own line of freelance compressed HO-scale ore boat kits.

Ken, I was going to point out the Bearco models, especially that for $300 one can have an HO scale replica of the great Edmund Fitzgerald...

Honestly, thought not very feasible, I'd love a HO scale version of their 1/300 scale Paul R Tregurtha...

P.S. for those of you who have not surfed Bearco's site, Ken's ship is there! Check in the additional photos...

foty89, I feel like I've just been to a Star Trek convention and committed a technical faux-pas about some dilithium crystals or some such thing :p;):D Just kiddin....

Besides, have you seen the great lakes? Sure looks ocean-ish when you're on the shore.

Yep, been there, very big. Fly over them a few times a year too. Always nice to know the water landing instructions on the safety pamphlet might have some practical point.
