ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

I'm not sure why you picked that unit to model. If you look at all the Army GP-10's on LocoPhotos, you'll see that one you picked is the only one with a GP-35 style cab. All the others have the more common rounded cab roof. It is a GP-35 style cab so a Cannon GP-3x cab would be a better replacement.

There is no Proto GP-18 in production. The Proto GP-18's all had high hoods and dynamic brakes. The only other company to produce a GP-18 was AHM, which has the high short hood but no dynamic brake. I would find one of those to use on a P2K frame since removing the dynamic brake is the hardest thing to get looking right. If you use a Proto hood, the best thing to to is use a Dremel tool to cut out the dynamic brake housing and replace it with scratchbuilt styrene to match the rest of the hood. This is not an easy task.

The filter was made by a company named Horst and is commonly known as an ox-yoke filter. This is a combination of an air intake and filter, built at the ICG's Paducah shops. The two units in your pictures have an additional filter added for use in sandy or dusty environments so you'd have to scratchbuild that and add it to a standard ox-yoke filter. You can get the standard Horst filter at http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/229-2706.

As for the type of fan, most of the GP-10's have two 48" fans although there were several variations. It looks like the 4625 has a 48" fan at the rear but I can't tell what types of fans the 4624 has. Many GP-10's retained their standard 36" fans but had "liberated exhausts", with four large spark arresters on top of the long hood. I would guess that the two engines in your pictures have a pair of 48" fans since they have the later cab style.

Unless you're really in love with this particular model, it would be much easier to follow the ICG practice. Get an Atlas or Proto GP-9 and add the low short hood and modify it to represent a GP-10. You can get one without dynamic brakes and you would not have to modify the cab roof shape. You'd end up with one like the photo at http://www.locophotos.com/PhotoDetails.php?PhotoID=34143.

Hi !

Thanks for the information. I will check what i want to make exactly. About the half of GP10 are made with "square" cab. I probably make this one for the moment.

The GP9 low nose cab must be available soon for CN, i probably can be fitted for other use.

THanks a lot.

I don't know where you got this information but a search of 82 photos at LocoNet reveals only two units with the square roof - the two US Army units you posted. The Illiniois Central always used the GP7/9 cab and only changed the front of the cab to accommodate the short nose. These were cheap upgrades and the railroad did not spend money fabricating new cabs unless they were dealing with a wrecked locomotive. I don't know if the two units you posted were wreck rebuilds or if these were never Paducah rebuilds and have been labeled as GP-10's as a general description of upgrades done by another railroad or rebuilder. Whatever the case, a true GP-10 with the square roof was a rare at best, not common.

Hi !

To make a model with round cab i must scratchbult the front, where are the numberboard ans the windows too. Each comments are good but i'm not sure that it's more easy.

Anyway i want at least 2 locomotive, when the right cab where available i probably make the other model.

THanks !

Hi !

It's not exactly them but it's the more accurate at the moment.

I already see them but like it's not identical, i ask the question.

Other idea ?

Thanks !

The light fixture is exactly the same. The base is a bit longer, but you can easily trim that down. I have one of these engines stationed here at Fort Bragg. It used to deliver the jet fuel tankers to Pope AFB before they went to trucks.

Hi !

If you have a second check the light again, It's true that the base are easy to cut but the top are round on the model and square on the detail associate light.

If i don't have other choice i will try to corect them but if you or anyone have a other idea it can be better.

Thanks !

Nice car and models. What's the first one, the one with the shovel on the side? Kind of looks like a modified M-113 but I've never seen one quite like it.

Gee, anyone else think its alittle weird that the U.S Army loco's are painted in the Marines colors?

Is there a reason that theyre painted red and gold, or just for visibility?

Those are M113's, like a command unit, or something like that.
