Train Spotting - UP in the NE???

I suppose it makes sense for one railroad to, at times, sell some of their equipment to another railroad. I was SHOCKED, though, to see, what appear to be, two Union Pacific engines hanging out in Northern Vermont! There was no lettering on the engines that said "Union Pacific," but the paint scheme sure looked right, and there was no lettering saying anything else, either. Just shocking to see them on the other side of the country.

One of the engines is number 2652 (I think), if anyone knows anything about it.

if it doesnt say union pacific on it, it is probably a lease unit that was previously a up unit. some lease companies do not repaint the locos, especially if it is not needed. they just make sure that the lettering is removed or painted over.

In the philly area you can sometimes see UP loco's on the CSX rails. You'll also find several other rail names from time to time.

Agreed that the particular UP-painted is a former UP, but also true that locomotives can stray far outside their own territory. Here in Muskogee OK in UP/BNSF country I've seen CP, CSX, Iowa Interstate, etc. and so forth... None of which would seem to have any business being there. The CP/CSX train, in fact, didn't even have a UP anywhere in the consist. I've also seen NS post pics of one of their trains that was being headed up by a UP heritage unit. Seems the motive power may stray a bit to where it's needed rather than just sitting around idle where it's owned.

I recently saw a CP ES44 leading a train here on the CSX [ex-B&O] Old Main Line. UP and BNSF engines are old news, but I'd never seen any Canadian power here in Maryland before...

Citirail (CREX) have, or had, a lot of ex UP (previously C&NW) C40-8's, still with their UP paint and #'s with UP lettering painted out. The Reading & Northern (in Pennsylvania) purchased quite a few ex-Union Pacific SD40-2s and SD50s. They were running in the yellow paint until repainted into R&N colors. The ones the OP posted could be sold or leased to that railroad. Larry's Truck & Electric (reseller) in Ohio had some ex-UP units available in the past.

There have been two Union Pacific diesels operating on the local short line, NB Southern, for quite some time now. Both are still lettered for UP, while one has a black line through the name. Leased units I imagine. They operate here in Saint John, N.B. Canada and up into Maine on the former CP line.

What's hilarious is that UP is using all lease units right now in the yard down here. Every single GP is a lease unit. And I'm like..."guys, you're supposed to keep SOME for yourself"

Recently BNSF has been leasing MRL SD45's because of a shortage of their units.

A local shortline here in northwest Ohio -- Napoleon, Defiance & Western Railway -- has at least one loco in Santa Fe livery.
