That Oregon Guy
I was watching Jimmy of DIY and Digital today talk about his plans for the second deck of his layout. If you haven't seen it yet, give it a watch. He is always killing it with the N-scale stuff. While he was discussing his double deck, I had a thought: how could he compactly get his rolling stock from one layout to another, without taking up a ton of space with a helix or removing it from the layout?
I wanted to create a solution that connected the continuously running portion of his layout and the point-to-point section. That way, in the story of the layout, you could connect two decks without having to take up the costly amount of space a helix would take up. Therefore, building a continuous railroad connected by industries and not decks.
This issue plagues my railroad plans since I want to fit in continuous running and serving industries. The two decks solve this, but connecting the two is a hard task, which is why I decided I needed an elevator.
I researched what is out there now, and I found out there are solutions, but they are way too expensive and not the size I was looking for. I don't desire to put whole trains on the elevator, too, only a few cars at a time. Therefore, I wanted it to be more compact, also a need for the layout. I want it to be manual as well since I don't have the desire to motorize it.
I drew up a few crude plans in between jobs at work to work out how it could work:

These are all really crude and need some refinement, but the idea is there. There are all different ways to solve this interesting problem.
Has anyone out here tried to build a small elevator like this? Does anyone have any recommendations for what to use? Is this a bad idea? Let me know what you guys think about this.
