Its a lot of work keeping the lines up for the trains to run,
But the crews are out fighting the bitter cold or blistering sun.
Pulling all nighters cleaning up a wreck,
Waiting for track-time while drinking coffee on the front deck.
The ones working graveyard on a long Ballast Train,
Working by spotlight threw the cold, stanes, and pane.
The ones in the yard spending all day shunting freight,
The ones fighting driving rains out rewiring and fixing the crossing gates.
The guys on the Draglines fixing wash-outs with rock,
The ones covered in grease repairing rolling stock.
The Line Monkeys half froze working Branches to remove the snow,
The loaders at the chutes covered in dust from loading coal.
For the guys laying rails and driving home the spikes,
And the ones in the yards throwing switches in the moonlight.
For the guys in the work train bringing up a fresh crew and load of supply,
For the crew in the bunks resting so when they reach the site to work and rise.
The ones that are up and leaving their loved ones in the middle of the night when the call comes threw,
This is for the ones behind the seen that stand tall, strong, and true.
This was inspired by my father, Richard Lee Kendall. One of the hardest working and proudest Railroad man the Burlington will ever see
