Post pics of your scratch built items here.
Installed on layout, or not.
No kitbashing.
No 3D printing.
One or two purchased parts allowed, but don't get crazy. Make sure you point such items out.

Please mention the scale in each post.
If you want describe construction, maybe do a seperate thread, so this thread can be mostly pics
for users to scroll through.

Me first, go figure.

N scale.

She towers above all else.

N scale.

I seem to model buildings that are track related for some reason...

It's a bunkhouse with a garage on the first floor.

Being a garage kind of guy, it was easy for me to detail the inside real nice - that's not usually the case.

Yet another N scale diesel facility.

This one also sold for 150 - to the same guy that bought the other one.

This one, this one was a little difficult...

N scale large trestle.

Just put the stain on it today. There is a prototype to be seen on railpictures.com.
I changed the deck so it has the walkway.

I sell them a couple retail hobby shops and on eBay.
I could sell them here for less if someone wants to go that route.
I mark them up to cover feeBay's markup.

Yes, working on pics for just that. Problem is that I get going and don't
get pics taken often enough...
Do you find yourself saying "I'll definitely document this one" and then getting so absorbed in the building that you completely forget?

Keep em coming guys...gotta show them scratch building has not died.
Can do!
Scratch built water tower.

All structures are HO scale.

Here's some more scratch built stuff. All HO scale.
Fireworks stand. This was inspired by a song by Southern rock/Americana artist Paul Thorn. I drew the sign myself.

Sandhouse and water tank combo. This was one of my very first scratch builds. Made of modeling clay and wood.

Excursion cars. Built entirely of wood, the trucks and couplers are the only off the shelf commercial items.

This flatcar, sans the load of coarse, is also scratch built. Once again, only the trucks and couplers are off the shelf.

A question

I am in the process of building a paper mill in HO scale.

I am mainly using .040 Evergreen plain sheet styrene to build the structures as facades. For a backing I usually use 1/2” smooth 1 sided plywood. Available on the shelf is some. 3/8” and 1/4”. What would you use and why. Would you add stiffeners or not? Suggestions are helpful.

Mockup, the yellow paper machine length is 80’ on the layout it will be. 202’ HO feet

1/8 mdf is much cheaper and would probably work for this?
Ribs would work too I imagine - this is what I would likely do.

For me, I don't use plastic.

I take legal folders, the green or brown ones, and glue them together with contact cement. Makes a strong panel, since the folders are fibrous.
Two layers, three, whatever. By staggering the joints, you can make larger sheets.
If you make a simple jig, curved panels can be made.

I use a cheapy paper cutter to cut the perimiter nice and square.
You can scribe them, sand them, stain them, and on. You can even miter the corners by sanding. Any paint will stick like crazy. Sometimes, I use no paint at all.

They sure glue up easily, and the glue, titebond II, is cheap.

Also, I do not cut small openings - I stamp them, with a SHARP wood chisel(s).
Quite often, I will do the same - but with a bare box knife blade.
It is a lot easier to do.
For larger openings, a box knife and a small square - after I have
stamped their corners nicely.

I will be doing another thread in which I'll document new builds in a little while...I did not want to clutter this one up with a lot of how too stuff.
