Uh-oh Willis, now you got me started...!
I don’t have a dog of my own, but when we first started dating, my wife’s parents had a 15-year-old mutt, 65% beagle and 35% [I think] bulldog. Whenever I would ring her parents’ doorbell, this bloodcurdling
ROAR would erupt [this is why I think he was part bulldog] and get closer to the front door

. A few seconds later Vicky would answer, see my apprehensive expression and say, “Oh, don’t worry about Sparky, he’s harmless, go ahead and
pet him on the head to let him know you’re his friend.” Meanwhile, Sparky just stood there staring at me with a blank expression and I gave Vicky a look that said “Are you NUTS!?” She just smiled and said “Go ahead, he’s waiting.” So I
carefully reached down and patted him a few times as instructed, and he turned around and walked away [
weird…]
A few years later after we were married, we would sometimes spend the weekend at Vicky's parents' house. By this time Sparky and I were buddies. He
LOVED going on walks, usually with my father-in-law. One Sunday morning while everybody else was still asleep, I went to the front door and let him in after he'd been outside all night. I wanted to get the newspaper, so I moved his chain that was hanging in front of my jacket - his tail started wagging slightly. I said to him, "Wait a minute...you've been out there all night, you don't really want me to take you on a
walk right now.. do you?" The tail-wagging got really intense and he jumped up and started nudging my hand that was holding the chain, as if to say, "Hurry up and put that on me and let's GO!" (So much for relaxing with the morning paper...) Apparently this was a 'security blanket' for him, being hooked to a leash and walking with a hominid.
He lived to be 20 years old, first losing his hearing, then his 80% of his sight. My poor F-I-L took it pretty hard when they had to put Sparky 'under' after losing bladder function.
