Your use of the 3d printer for detailing is outside the box. I mainly use mine to build motor mounts and an occasional headlamp, but pipework and sandboxes - neat!!
Thank you, but the latest models are actually using epoxy (Milliput) and some wire. Only the first model has the 3d printed parts. Now. that is only because my friends Printer needs a new bed build plate. I would be doing a LOT more printing if it was up and running. I need to get one of my own.
Ok, been awhile, but I made a lot of progress. The models are almost done, but here is a over view of the progress.
I had to make a custom headlight. I would 3d print one, but as I mentioned I don't have a printer of my own yet. So I made one by hand.
I grinded down the "Screw thing" in the photos until it looked right. I drilled holes in the sides so the number boards light up. Then I glued some sheet aluminum for the bottom board. A little hot glue for the lens did the trick. I am very happy with how it turned out. Has the face of a NYC steamer, which is what I wanted.
After wiring the led, I finished adding the details before printing. I'm a scrap guy. I use whatever I got around for details instead of buying them. Ladders were salvaged from a donor, as the old ones fell apart.
1/4 W(0.25 Watt) , 680 ohm. One does the trick, they shine bright. I then lightly paint over the bulbs to get the color I want. It is three bulbs wired in series. They are 5mm LEDs. It was all I had right now. I plan on getting much smaller lights moving forward.
You like them bright. I tend to go darker. I have 3mm warm white bulbs and did some testing with resistors. Since they are shining through thick plastic in the front and a small fiber in the tender, I'm going with 1K in the front and 4.7K in the tender.
I finely finished them! Well, sort of. There was some changes in my plans. The Berkshire has been put on the backburner, as I short circuited the LEDs when putting the engine back together. I I'm going to reopen in and put new ones in, I will wait until I have the proper smaller LEDs.
I was going to move on to something else entirely, when I was blessed with a Bachmann DCC "Overland" 4-8-4. So I wanted to get it modified right away. I worked on that model as well as finishing my PRR L2 Mike. I will let the photos do most of the talking----->
