The 60/40 Layout And Other Railway Related Things

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

I meant to add this earlier, although I have a truck tuner on occasion it really doesn't make any difference and I still have a high rolling resistance, I've found a simple and inexpensive way around this by adding these waisted bearings.

They also work if you've been a little over enthusiastic with the tuner too.

I never knew something like this existed!

Do these work on all rolling stock trucks, or are there different ones for different trucks?

I've fitted them on Athearn, Walthers, Hornby and Marklin trucks without any problems, although they are supposedly for OO, EM and P4 trucks.
also there are two versions the waisted (plain) and shoulder (top hat) the Top Hat are great if, your journal box for whatever reason, is too deep and the wheelset always falls out of the truck.

Here's a link, they're about halfway down the page, if you want some I can pop them in the post.

Right, I decided to add some marker lights to my CN observation car, I mean, it can't be hard, can it ? It seems harder than I imagined, wiring the white nano LEDs was relatively easy, just solder them to the existing LED strip light, that worked, my problem came when I added the two red marker lights, I've had no end of issues getting these as well as the white markers and the interior lights working together, long story short, I've had to add a separate set of wiper pick-up, resistor, cap and bridge rectifier just to power the red marker lights.

Also added a dummy headlight.

Very cool! 😀

I chose not to run passenger service on my layout but I would if I had more space. However, you are inspiring me to think about interior scenes of my structures 😄
Just general figures about town add quite a lot, walking the dog, a woman going shopping etc, check out Willies and Dave's (@logandsawman) threads.

I need to add figures to the station platform and signal boxes, the larger buildings aren't possible as I constantly have to move them.

I'm a ways away from adding people and vehicles but the interior scenes (especially in the cars I think) are another level of detail which at some point I would love to have on my layout. Looking forward to seeing your progress!

So the car is now populated, electrics checked and pinstriping done, ready for a turn around the layout.

Looking good.

And that Ladies and Gentlemen, is where it all went pear-shaped, I intended to add a little video of the train going round the layout, but I can't, it seems that although I measured all the old and new wheelsets (36" which I thought to be correct) to ensure that all the couplings would match, which they do, they're don't match up with the height of the loco coupling which they should, it seems the passenger cars are too high.

I have enough 33" to fit on all the cars, hopefully that will cure the problem.
