The 60/40 Layout And Other Railway Related Things

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

Finally got to run my Hornby Eurostar with it's new First class coaches, only two issues all in all.

The second coach has light bleed from one end, so I may either cut off two LED's from the lighting strip at that end, or paint the interior of the bulkhead.

Second issue was in the center of the train as it passes the diorama, the corner of the carriage is catching one of the bridge abutments, not enough to derail, but enough to cause a nasty "thump" as it goes by.

Thinking of upgrading the lights to bi-colour, which would give me 4 head/tail lights depending on direction of travel, may add a cab light too🤔

I bought this a while ago.

And turned it in this.

It still needs the CN decals which I don't have, and a few touch ups, maybe one day.

Finally got some work done, repainted the Chessie Caboose, so now it's a sea grey colour, the CN caboose has been part-painted see tomorrow if the idea works or not, also painted the guardrails for my EMD SD60 Demo, it was missing one side when I bought it, taken me a while to find a set, wrong colour, hence re-painting them.

I've decided in the end to do a total repaint of the Bachmann CN caboose which is now finished, decaled and I've added a battery powered tail lamp. I Still need to give it a spray of dullcoat, but that's tomorrow, and yes, I've now glued the smoke stack back on.

I used Microscales decals, so I've added more than Bachmann originally had on the model, but I really wish Microscale would use a different backing colour, trying to see extremely small white lettering on a light blue background has given me a headache, and I used those magnifying glasses.

I am really not having any luck when it comes to my Caboose's, this is the Great Northern, and this is another one that someone has taken no care of at all (again) .

This is an easy way to know when someone thinks of them as merely "Toy's" and those of us who regard them as Models

Notice this has two different trucks.

Cleaned it all up. I've removed the trucks and used styrene as a filler where the trucks fitted, presently waiting for the epoxy to dry, I'll drill and tap them later.

Painted the weight after a suitable rust inhibitor was applied, the Chassis above in the foto is a doner, I'll only use the trucks from that one, when I find my box of wheelsets and find another axle, I don't use plastic wheels or axles, one wheelset on the original trucks is plastic, the other 3 I can use.

At some point I'll need to find a end Guardrail, or I may replace both.

It is in good hands now for sure!

Looks like it cleaned up nice!

Great you're taking these old cabooses and breathing new life in them!
Yeah, but not intentionally, I just seem to buy neglected models, but it's kinda fun trying to "restore" them to some semblance of their former glory, even if it is a slightly bodged job.

My Rescue project.
As I said in the RPO thread, Broken stirrup and underframe, no trucks or couplers.

The underframe was broken at one end, so no coupler pocket, glued and screwed a KD box, and added a set of trucks, and repaired the stirrup.

I felt the car was a little on the light side so added 10g each end, waiting for the glue to dry and I'll put it all together

Thats going to make a nice-looking boxcar!
Yes, is does look really good, Athearn do make some really nice models. I've got a few CN Hoppers and thought a boxcar (or two) would go well as part of a mixed freight rake, it was supposed to be rtr, but someone took it apart, probably to cannibalise it for parts I would think, but as I had all the missing bits like the trucks I thought for ÂŁ5 why not.
