The 60/40 Layout And Other Railway Related Things

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

If it's running rough, sounds like a tune up is needed or maybe you have a carb needle blocked possibly both.

I'm hoping that's all it is but I'll probably replace the Carby anyway for an S&S to keep things compatible.

Looks as though I'll have to post pictures of the "prototype bridge" well, I will when it's done of course :)

That does seem to be a lot of oil so yeah - get it fixed before it REALLY blows up and leaves you stranded some where. Not sure about the UK but here, a new crate engine is cheaper due to less work - no messing around trying to find the problem to begin with.

As for the bike - I'm not 100% sure but think it is a Carby issue or just a tune up, something it hasn't had for awhile. Last year I changed the exhaust system from the nasty HD slip on to Vance and Hines full exhaust with an S&S Air Cleaner Kit. Changing those things has effected the tune of the bike, I think. I probably need one of two things - a new S&S Carby ($450) or put a rebuild kit through the stock carby and keep my fingers crossed. I've only just ordered new Plugs and Leads to start with.

At the end of the day though - I'm going to have to find a mechanic that can work on the bike - you want a laugh (that aint so funny)? HD will not work o the bike because it is older than 10 years old. Bottom line, their parts replacers (aka so called frickin mechanics) don't know how to fix something that needs a mechanic - they can't just plug the bike into something, sit back and charge me $90 plus an hour for the privilege

Problem is "real mechanics" know that HD wont work on them so they (naturally) take advantage of that as well

Anyway - bottom line is the bike runs like a PIG at the moment so I need to get it fixed, whatever the problem is.

Yes, you'd be well advised to take Smudges advice and NOT mention that "H" word ................. BUT, I am now putting together a new and improved "air bridge" - one that replicates a rope bridge in an earth quake. Once I have perfected it, I'll send you one if you like 😁😅
Tony if you had open pipes and then closed the breathing ability with the V&H ( which just happen to be a terrible performance pipe ) you now need a larger main jet and properly wouldn’t hurt to go up on the pilot yet. If memory serves me right you have an Evo. Whatever you do don’t goto a S&S carb stick with the CV carb. You really need to do a plug chop to find out the entire story. Stick to one thing for for troubleshooting, ie if you want to check the plug needs for any grounding , at the darkest hour run the bike somewhere dark and give the plug leads a lite spray of water to see if you see any arcing. If you run the bike out on the highway at pitch black night and look down to cherry red headers you found the answer for sure.

Lynn, not sure why you think the V&H are a bad performance system - since I took the damn screaming eagle things off and put an S&S Tear Drop Air Cleaner and V&H Exhaust, the bike has run MUCH better until now.

I believe the main issue now is the jets, as you said, and they will be rectified by the install of an S&S Super E kit. A couple of weeks ago I (somehow) managed to run out of fuel, just not thinking about things and had to go to my reserve, something I haven't done since I owned the bike. I have a feeling I may have sucked up some crud from the tank which got into the carby as well. Either that, or when I filed the bike, I got a bad batch of fuel as that was when it started running rough.

So the possibilities - clogged jets? Wrong Jets, which I knew? Dirty Fuel? Sticking Choke? Wrong Fuel Air mixture after the upgrades? Out of tune for the upgrades? OR a combination of two or more things.

No matter what - the following changes will be made, changes that are very similar to a guy I knows bike:

V&H True Exhaust (baffled)
S&S Air Cleaner
S&S Super E Carb
S&S Single Fire HI-4N Ignition
Plugs
Leads
Battery Cables

All of the above will eliminate both possible fuel and possible electrical issues.

Later this Winter:

Andrews 27 Cam
Lifters
All associated components, gaskets, bearings etc

I’m just not a fan of the Super E ,but that’s just me and have learned a lot through the years of how a well tuned CV carb will give best performance and reliable. My son has the super E on his 97 Super glide and has had lots of tuning issues. Saying youre going to electronic ignition, good move so I’m assuming you still have points and if you do , is it possible you have a bad condenser or coil? HDForum has a lot of really good Evo guys on there and will have some good info. I’m on a Victory now so don’t work on Harleys or bikes for that matter now adays, other than my sons or when I pull over on my road trips to help a brother out. And actually I’m grounded from riding , driving etc until my cataracts are fixed up.

@Lynnb Thanks mate and yeah, most things, including in this hobby, are personal opinions and preferences. :)

An associate of mine has a Harley with a Bisani exhaust and S&S Super E and S&S Air system and loves it. That being said, he works on his own bike as well.

I bought the V&H Exhaust because it was a Full Exhaust and because I love he look of it and no other reasons - a vanity thing :) I bought the S&S stuff to keep everything compatible (hopefully) along with some other recommendations. Nothing I have bought to upgrade the bike is for the sole purpose of getting better performance. If that happens as a result of what I have bought and installed then so be it, but definitely NOT the priority :)

Damn mate - hope you get those cataracts fixed soon. I don't know about riding BUT I'd go nuts if I couldn't drive.
