I spent some time over the holidays updating some of the 5 Mile RR website. My HTML coding is not perfect and I still run into some website issues, but it works for me. I added reference maps and more "Area News".

Accomplishments last year: The truss bridge is complete, although I plan to change out the trestle bents at some point. But the bridge is set and the Shay can make it everywhere on the layout now. The other loco's not so much yet. The Shays are so forgiving! The track is all hardwired. Many of the redwoods are now set. Decided on what structures will be in Occidental and need to working on dimensions for each.

Troy: We love those cast iron skillet pizzas!

2nd floor deck planking complete. I thinking gluing the 2nd floor to the 1st floor is next.

Altamont Hotel update. 2nd floor is is now connected to the 1st floor. I used 4 spots of silicone to do this. The reason? I had to break them apart twice. The front deck/2nd story had to be widened to better position the support posts on the ground level. That required removing the front deck planks (2nd story), add to the base, recut longer planks & replace. The posts are not set yet, I'm still messing with the details/colors. The roof took some time but worked out (still needs a little work). The railings/posts are next.

Just some touch up stuff, add chimney and the Altamont Hotel model is finished. It will be the second structure in Occidental.

Larry's Creek trestle construction is nearly complete. I was anxious to see how a locomotive made the slight curve between the bridge and the trestle. So I temporarily set the trestle and gave the shay the first run. The shay being so short had no problems.

Nice trestle! The improvised support on the branch line is a nice detail....

McCaughey's store (1877) is coming along. The front windows and doors are cut in and nearly ready to be glued in place. I bought some shutters (Grandtline) but decided to make my own. The seam where the two clap board pieces are glue together will be cover by the front awning. The old photo is a later version of the same building (1898), different owners.

The bad news for me, Daves trainsandtrees website will be going away in January. The web hosting company I use notified me that they will no longer be hosting websites. So unless I come up with a lot of motivation to move & pay for the website it will be gone. Up until now it's been free to have it and I used html coding for each page and everything is uploaded through FTP app. I will keep the domain name just in case.

Dave - you might consider: What is your INet connection out speed? If above 50Meg and your provider can give you a 'sticky' IP, roll your own server. Sure, could be a tad slow at times but at least folks can still see ya. Static IP's usually mean some sort of business class which ups the price quite a bit. I have been doing this for years as we are not close to any datacenter. Driving to Spokane just to do some upgrades or fixing something that has to have you in person gets old really fast. If my connection goes down for a bit it is not an Earth stopping event. Ya, sooner or later I will bite the bullet and get in a datacenter again.

McCaughey's General Store - Update
Walls are up, working on roofing material. Installing shingled roof although asphalt shingles were not around yet in 1877. I guess I could have painted them brown for shakes? I use Suretape CP 743 for most of my structure roofing. Cut in strips, then cut half way through the strip for shingles. Once the strip is attached I brush a little black weathering powder on the uncut part so the next course of shingles doesn't stick to the previous strip. Otherwise when pressed down the shingle/cuts blend in too much and can't be seen if that makes sense. The backside may be just rolled tarpaper since it won't be seen. After the roofing I plan to start on the front awning.
