Hello, I like many other had a HO model train set when I was a kid, well I got the basic loop, engine, 2 cars and a caboose. Dad was the one who went nuts buying track cars and building at hobby shops all over the place. Ended up having a pretty good size 4 X 8 layout in the garage for a number of years, then lost intrest, it got boxed up and is somewhere at my parents house today.

Now that I am a bit older I want to make my own layout, but I am torn between what to do, I have a unfinished basement, but dont want a layout so big I cant see from one end to the other, but I also want more than a loop with a yard.

Right now I have a handfull of HO engines, close to 75 pieces of rolling stock (HO) a bunch of flex track, and a starter N scale set with some extra e-z track and rolling stock.

I cant decide what scale to go with HO, is easy to work with and there are thousands of ideas on the internet for layouts, but it takes up a lot of space. N scale is good to work with and would cut the space I would need in half. Then theres the Z scale, I have never seen one of these trains in person, but I have been reading about them, I am really interested but they are hard to find dealers for this scale.

Welcome to the forums.

N-scale seems to have a large following now due to the space requirements (less than HO). Lots of choices for engines, rolling stock and track.

I'm HO but I like big steam and I like the way they look in HO.
