Long Winded Old Fart
I've been looking on the net for some supersoft foam rubber like what electronics is shippped in. Anyone got any or know where I can find some or get some samples? I need it to make passenger car diaphrams. It has to be almost zero compression to make it work.

^try shower liner membrane. You should be able to get it from Home Depot. Its the stuff that lines the floor before the tiles go one.

How thick? They make foam gaaket tape that is used on joining flanges on larger duct work....

That stuff is tooo solid. Need the stuff that is real light weight. Almost feather lite. It's a real loose foam rubber. It's used to pack real expensive electronics gear. I had a piece of it somewhere in my trainroom & can't find it.

Are you talking about the high density black foam? At work we ship all our electronics in form fitting blocks of the stuff. I have no idea where we get it from...

However! You probably have a local foam distributor or manufacturer. Good places to look for leads are to call the local fabric and craft stores (not the mega-craft-stores like a Hobby Lobby but the seriously specialized fabric stores), places that do furniture re upholstery or lay carpet. They can probably tell you who in your area might supply foam in bulk and that supplier may either carry what you have, be able to get it for you, or be able to direct you to someone else who does supply it.

I looked in 4 craft stores today in Ft.Myers, Fl. I also checked 3 WM stores in their craft depts. I stopped at 3 upholstery shops & 2 foam rubber shops. No one knows what I'm talking about. This stuff is super soft. the density is almost nill. I had a piece that was about an inch thick & 6" square & was light green. It has to be soft enough, so when the car turns on the track it doesn't derail from contact w/the foam. It has to be able to compress just like a diaphram.

who doesnt know what a sponge looks like?
sorry sir, those were all i could think of when you said "packs in high end electronics" and then said green. Im lost now too.

Foam

Larry, I believe I know what you are looking for. I would call it more of a sponge material than foam. I've got some older foam ( pre-cut )diaphrams I think I'll never use. Pm me your address and I'll send them to you. Joe

Larry is it a man-made product or a natural/Real sponge? If'n it's a real sponge matterial, I bet you would find it at the sponge docks in Tarpon Springs, Florida!

Are there any elecronics dealers that sell parts for those guys that like to built thier computers near you? You could always go to them where you know they will have it.

foam

Larry you can try a radio or tv station as they are allways replacing parts.
Just ask to see the station engineer and he would probably give you the stuff free

I have a few sheets @ 2x3 foot (guessing) That I get from the phone company that we receive electronics in. I can part with some if you don't find what your looking for. Its charcoal colored (flat both sides) and pinkish which is flat one side and egg carton like on other. Drop me a message, I could send a picture if you like.

Try Joanne's fabrics, they have sheets of foam in different thicknesses, most of it is green.

Wal-mart also has foam in the fabric dept. and that is white. It comes rolled up in plastic.

I have bought it to line boxes to carry my trains in.

Richard looking at MP 242 while working for the FEC Rwy.

larry, you could use cardboard lined with the thin foam someone posted earlier for the actual car. Then place that in the box and use insulating foam like Great Stuff from home depot to fill the areas around that.

Thanks Everyone for all of the idea's.
Straight-Track sent me an asst. of stuff to make them out of. I'm going to Rad-Shack tomorrow & see what they have too. They have tons of stuff sitting in their backroom that they've never returned to their warehouse & I'll probably find what I'm looking for there. I've been saying Foam & what it is is like a loose foam found in electronics shipping. The foam that comes in the engine boxes is to thick/dense & is not soft enough. What I'm talking about is super lite & real springy. Once I find it I'll be sure & take a photo to post here in this thread.
