i have a rivarossi big boy with your basic digitrax decoder in it , runs great .i bought a jst 9 tsunami steam decoder for more options
well the tsunami decoder gets hot after i plugged it in & i hadn't changed anything i popped the digitrax decoder back in & it runs great without
getting hot . im lost on this one . any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Age doesn’t matter, the rated current does. A new decoder that has a lower current rating well might overheat, and eventually fail.
 


An ammeter for your particular DCC system should be available from the regular sources: online hobby supplies, your local hobby shop.

You can wire in a regular ammeter. The readings won’t be right, but it will give you some idea of how much current you’re drawing. I’m not sure, but I think the readings will be lower than the true value.

Probably the root-mean-square value of peak.
 
Older decoders were usually only able to handle "less" motor current draw and newer decoders are now rated for a higher draw. So, I would think the newer decoder should have been OK.
That being said, I quit using Tsunami decoders due to over heating problems and locos operating unpredictably. I have never used Digitrax decoders. I prefer TCS for my steamers and ESU for diesel locos.
Just my 2 cents worth...............John

i have about 15 tcs wow decoders in my steamers so i agree
 
9-pin or 21 pin?
If you replaced a 9-pin with a 9 pin, then the new decoder is bad.
Make sure the GREEN and BROWN wires are cut off, not used, or connected correctly
