Sponge? What kind of sponge?

I've been watching a lot of videos about painting structures. It seems like sponges are they way to go. The "respected" modelers always mentions using the "same" of sponge. My question is what SAME ole sponge are they talking about; natural, synthetic, manufactured, expensive, sponge are they are talking about. I'm kind of lead footed when it comes to applying small amounts of paints and the sponge idea looks cool; but NO ONE mentions what kind of sponge they are using. What is the best kind of sponge to use for applying SMALL amounts of paints

I use foam rubber. The same grey foam used in disposable foam paint brushes. Usually from packing material used to protect
products in cardboard boxes.

A lot of the weathering guys use make-up wedges. Their cheap, and versatile for paint application.

You can probably find this assortment at Michaels or Hobby Lobby. I use different sponges for different effects. Coarse sponges are great for peeling paint effect.

Jason Jensen does a great job with using sponges in a lot of his videos. I use the same techniques explained in his videos.
