Sound Decoder and ditch lights on a Proto SW9.

I bought the ditch light castings DA #1022 but they are plastic. Are they supposed to be pewter or plastic? They look like they will be very hard to work with.

Are there any premade metal castings on the market?

Doesn't the Details West ditch lights come in metal? Many aftermarket part makers give you a choice, metal or plastic.

If you use LEDs, the castings being plastic won't matter as LEDs don't generate any heat.

yea, but pewter is easier to drill.

It doesnt really matter but the DA housings are more to scale then the DW Metal ones as the DW housings were designed to fit a 1.5v bulb making the housing much thicker. For the plastic housings I take my time drilling as they are more fragile then the metal ones and break very easily. As for having LEDs flash you can watch this video and this is a SD40-2 that I did for a friend.

Yes it would as I just added Ditch lights to a friends MP15DC.
Nice looking job. I sent you a private message about installation.

I have a nice C&O version of the Proto loco with no sound. I heard it was a little difficult to get sound into a non-sound model. I'm considering a trade for a Broadway unit with factory sound, but I believe the Proto engine has a nicer appearance?

Broadway has sound (the sound of a GP9) in their SD40-2s, but Proto 2000 has better detail (although I would have to say that Broadway's motor/mechanism is better. Proto 2000s have weird gearing which makes them hard to MU with other brands and need some time to break in.)

Sorry maybe I got things confused here. I thought the tread started off about Proto SW9 locos. That is the loco I have as a non-sound unit wanting to convert into a sound unit.

The Broadway switcher I mentioned as a possible trade is the SW7 Paragon model with Alco engine. I tested it and it sounded pretty good. Wasn't that when Broadway was using QSI sound decoders?

Broadway's Paragon (sound equipped line) started out using QSI, but they felt that QSI did not meet their high standards (QSI recycles their sounds) so they went with Loksound. Broadway no longer makes the Paragon Line (It has been replaced by Paragon 2). Broadway's Blue Line and Paragon 2 Line now uses their own sound system/decoders (which are very similar to Loksound's decoders) but sound a lot better.

Shell Exchange?

Does any one know if the Proto SW8 shell will interchange with the SW9 one??
In other words could my SW9 shell fit onto the newer SW8 chassis with sound?
