V&AL

I'm a US modeler, with a free-lanced electric mainline. I'm looking for a rugged British electric locomotive that the V&AL imported for a evaluation, and may have actually bought a few... Anyone know a good unit? Something solid, dependable, and well used, kinda like the SD40-2 or so...

The Class 47 may fit your bill, although built for passenger service they were used to haul freight too!

In terms of more up to date locomotives, you can try the Class 60 which is a diesel but in model terms is perhaps the best that Hornby have ever built in terms of detail and operation. Model ref R2640 on this page! I have one in EWS livery and it is my favourite UK model beyond a shadow of a doubt!

Rogue's suggestion of a 47 or 60 fits the bill for a diesel. The newer Hornby drives are basically the same as Proto. I'd also add the Class 58 to that as BR had hoped to export the loco so that would give some credence to your story.

The title said 'electric'. If that's the case you really only have 4 choices. 3 25kv overhead locos Classes 86 87 90. Or the Class 73 which is a 3rd rail/ diesel hybrid loco. The available models are pretty ancient and not exactly state of the art. Also remember that UK models are 1:76 scale. While physically smaller in real life they do look a bit chubby next to most American HO locos due to the difference in scale.
