Hello,

We just got word this morning that our 6 new molds have been completed and are ready for final inspection. The supplier did our drive POM bushings and gears, took his time and delivered an outstanding mold on two of our traction motor related injection molds so we expect a very good product with minimal corrections.

The side-frame details cover the Blomberg B/M, HTC, and HTC Triple Clasp trucks. These molds include the brake cylinders, brake details and the modular details made of PS that complete the trucks. The molds from this supplier get us much closer to releasing the full truck kits (dummy) and powered trucks for our locomotive kits.

Our SD40-2W Brake Gear is a multi-media kit. The plastic component includes the brake wheel, brake wheel plate, chain details and two versions of the guide and pulley assembly. Anybody with a recent Intermountain SD40-2W purchase might note that this detail is either missing or incorrectly molded. There is a “early” version of the brake gear used on CNR 5241 up to CNR 5293. This is a single chain routing with a thicker pulley block. The later version used from CNR 5294 to CNR 5363 doubles back and has a slimmer profile. It is very similar to what was used on the SD50F/SD60F series and SD40U rebuilds.

The largest error in the Intermountain SD40-2W brake gear tooling is that the chain guide is about half the distance it should be and does not mate with the side sill underneath the brake stand. This is likely due to the hood and frame being modified to fit the drive. The kit also includes the detail components to route the chain on the HTC truck. I am going to replicate the chain on the truck with 3D layered photo-etch. DP 6158 is the new part number for the SD40-2W Brake Gear Kit.

An additional mold we started with this supplier due to a great sales push earlier this summer has two cavities that tackle the cab for the EMD/GMDD Dash 2 Spartan Cabs. The cabs are a one piece injection mold that is thin wall. We also have the photo-etch and window glass component in stock for the detail kits related to this project. The part of the cab in this injection mold will directly replace the area above the battery boxes. We have a few more molds planned to do multiple battery box options, number-boards, and noses. The main difference between the two cavities is the seam that runs down the center of the cab roof. On the GMDD cab this seam was present throughout the entire production. On the EMD roof, the seam was on the inside of the cab. Later, this moved to the same configuration as the GMDD cab. The two cabs are parts MK 4015 and MK 4017.
