so on we go with the process

i started to build the rockface behind the wooden wall for the tunnel.

Its done with Mifoshape. Then after some minutes, i carved the the rock face a bit so it looks a bit more natural but also "man made".

layering colors to find the right color in the end.

i think this looks almost perfect. i added a blackwash to finish it off.

placement to check everything.
looking good.

and this will be the small window where you can have a look into the tunnel.
so far i like it.

we will go from there i would say.

cheers

on we go with the build.
new week new update.

here you can see my tunnel portal inspiration. Mud Tunnel did the inspiration for my entrance.
its not 100% prototypical but iam totally fine with that. i say, if a expert is looking at my diorama he knows exactly what tunnel it is :)

IMG_2781.JPG

i did the whole entrance also out of Mt. Albert Scale Lumber.

IMG_2783.JPG

added a wash (like the one on the tunnel itself.

IMG_2794.JPG

and this is the finished tunnel entrance.

IMG_2803.JPG

and it fits. the engine can run trough without a problem. its tight but that was the goal.
that means, the next step will be, build the landscape around the entrance.
here i will also check some pictures from Mud Tunnel and try to mimic a fair amount of the surrounding.

cheers
Marco

When you are laying the plaster cloth, use a wet finger after application to fill in those holes in the cloth. Makes it easier to paint or cover with ground foam. It's also stronger if fully covered with plaster.

Looks good Marco.
Thank you Michael. The Plaster Cloth will be covered with Mifoshape, its just the first layer, so the holes dont bother me at all ;)

and here we have it folks

my "last" update from my vacation.
after this post your up2date with my build again :) and the progress will slow down a bit, because iam again at work (i know thats sad).

After the installation of the tunnel portal, i had to think about how to cover up everything and start to create the "mountain" around it.
I found some really thin paper, that worked perfect for the first layer. i did wet it with some matt medium.

IMG_2809.JPG

after it dried up, i put again some plaster cloth over it as the second layer.

IMG_2817.JPG

then i added the next layer on it. Mifoshape. I started to carve the rocks where i think will be rocks in the end.
i got some inspiration again from pictures from Mud Tunnel, so i did try to more or less match the pictures.

IMG_2819.JPG

and this is how it looks now.
i think for now not bad, but lets see how it looks after painting and some groundcover on it.

as a last step i cleaned up the whole diorama and lay out the footprints of all the buildings again.

IMG_2824.JPG

now i can see where the city will go, and how the surrounding landscape will take shape.
also another big project will be the bridge to the right.
i maybe have to saw off some more space to the left of the bridge. there the gap between "wall" and track is a bit small, but we will see.

so here you have it folks.
thats the actual status of the HOn3 Diorama :)
I like it and i cant wait to get back to work on it.

cheers
Marco

good morning everyone

yesterday (sunday) i spent some time again on my diorama (i had to wait on another side project). i decided to bring in some variaty on the trrain. also i had a spot where the rocks dont have much space, so i decided to cut that corner a bit back.

after some cutting it looked like this. this gives the whole terrain a bit of a randomnes, and maybe i can build some fun scenes there. we will see (maybe a hot dog cart or so, who knows.

added some plastercloths again. now let things dry, and then start creating the rock faces.
also i have to start on that bridge.

maybe question. do you think a normal concrete bridge would work? the diorama is placed in the late 50ies. so i think there allready where some concrete car bridges?

Cheers
Marco

So i need your help all.

Maybe i will add a stone wall to the steepest part on the diorama. i have two walls here, but iam not really shure if one of those would fit the era of late 50ies in the US. so please share your thoughts.

Version A:

Version B:

Would any of those two fit?
What do you think?

Cheers

thank you @NVSrr1500 and @DeaconKC
I think overall everyone agrees on A. that was also my intention to go with.

And just to be clear. The wall will not be that high.
i asked chatgpt for some ideas and this is what i got:

7d0312a4-2478-43d6-9128-c53c47ef65d3.png

and i think i will go with this step.
I will also color the stones a bit so it fits in the surroundings. atm the stones are to gray for around the Rio Grande Line i think. They need to be a bit more yellow and redish..

any feedback is welcome!

Cheers
Marco
