Move South, my next-door neighbor moved there a few months ago. I'm all for moving, my wife's not. I figure I would save about $6,000.00 in taxes and $4,000 in fuel oil. George
George- do you know the difference between a Yankee and a Damn Yankee?
A Yankee comes south on vacation, has a good time and leaves a pile of money before he goes home.
A Damn Yankee comes south and decides not to leave, annoying southerners because he did not leave money!

So tonight we ate at a Mexican restaurant. Go figure. Came all of the way from Texas to eat at a Mexican place in Mississippi! o_O For lunch today, we ate at a Cajun place in Lafayette LA that was damn good. Both places were super loud though, amplified by my hearing aids. They both had live music and several large parties, who were drinking heavily. Then tonight, some of the staff of at least 14 folks, sang Happy Birthday twice with all of the attendees, at close range to me.

Joe-
I'm surprised at the lack of traffic in the coffee shop
I wasn't expecting that either, all because I didn't post this morning!;)
Guy- Roads can be real space hogs. You may have noticed that many times I butt the sidewalks up to the layout edge and just imagine the streets are off-layout. When I include the complete street, I cheat and make the lanes 8'-9' wide to save space. I'll show some photos when I return next week. I think that the sidewalks look good.

Everybody have a good evening.

Well, howdy there internet people and those dodging hurricanes!

It's Troy again.

Today was the last day of the author convention. My brain is frazzled. My heart is full from chatting with friends.

With one exception.

We do a lot of networking at these events. Mostly, we're like-minded entrepreneurs working to build our brands, but never at the expense of another brand. A rising tide lifts all, that sort of thing.

But at lunch, had a couple of sci fi authors come along. We'd never met them, sure. We're a happy group.

I was sitting catty-corner across from my retired full-bird colonel USMC friend. Eight of us total at the table. The four at the other end, having a wonderful chatty conversation.

After a couple of simple things, one of the new guys looks at the Col (Ret) and asks about the war in Europe.

Ask a retired colonel his opinion, and you'll get it. Polite, and non-denominational. He and I had an interesting chat about the subject. I knew he was much more experienced than I on such topics. I shut up and listened.

Not this guy. He argued. Not just argued, he had a ready slam of an answer for anything. There wasn't a give and take, listen then respond. Acknowledge good points or anything.

I'll avoid the specifics, but after about 15 minutes Col (ret) had enough. I suspect he was so frustrated he wanted to pound his head against the wall. Instead, Col took his ball cap (with USMC and his last command unit embroidered) off held it in front of his face trying to throw up some visual protection. Anything to create a barrier. He thrust a hand out, palm forward. "NO MORE!" trying to make the guy stop his incessant tirade. That was after repeated attempts by both of us to change the subject.

After that, dude tried to shift to the legal woes of certain past politicians. Again, a one-sided conversation that would brook no disagreement.

I tuned him out, and we started a cross-table conversation that political guy kept trying to interrupt. I finally distracted him by revealing I knew a celebrity contestant from Survivor, and shared some of the behind-the-scenes info my friend has talked about.

We did finally get him to stop, but it was grueling, and barely hanging on to the label "polite conversation." Conversations of such topics should be two-sided, with the understanding that we can disagree politely. That never happened. When he effectively called me a racist for not agreeing with him (he is not a minority)... but then backpedaled as I called him on it...

Yeah...

Fortunately, we had the big beach blowout tonight. We found plenty of friends to fill our table. Had a good meal with great conversation. Everyone else headed in to experience Karaoke. I took a pass to come catch up on the internet.

I leave the hotel on the 9:30 shuttle. Arrive home about 5p. Looking forward to pizza with the wife.

Here's a little cheesecake for you

I don't fully understand what you're sayin about the USMC Col, his hat, hand and whatever else that was.
I guess we would have had to be there to understand it.
Minor editing and some more verbiage added. It was quite the site. we both admitted defeat at having a civil conversation with this guy. He wouldn't stop despite blatant suggestions that we talk about anything else.

Troy I get it I had a relative that was a Col in Army And my dad was a Master Sargent Army in a tank battalion He was in the Battle of the Bulge in WW2 and pretty sure that guy would wish to be somewhere else if he crossed either one of them All ways made me laugh though when my dad went to join they asked if any special tasks you good at he said yes I have a pilots license and he ends up driving a tank

Good Morning All!
44F in Libby
87F in Olive Branch

Agree with Smudge, the guy would have been stretched out on the floor. Some people just do not learn.

Anyway, 3 more loads and we will be headed home. Don't know yet if Maria wants to stop at here Brothers place up in Ohio or not. If so we also will get a chance to visit the Rock Hall; been wanting to do that for a few years now; ya just what I need ... more shirts.

Agreed that this place is quiet. Maybe Mel needs to do some impact advertising? It is funny, our normal Ruther Glen to OB run is usually pretty benign with not much traffic; I95 to I64 to I81 to I40. Friday early AM there were tons of 4 wheelers and big trucks on the road; even I64 was busy. No holiday in sight, so what gives? People maybe finally decided to go back to work? Everyone is out busy doing stuff!

Later

Wind and power outages are a bigger threat. Sucker looks like it's getting close per national Hurricane Center Visual.
Power still out here, charging my stuff with my in laws house so won’t be on much. Lost at least 40 trees around the yard, big ones hanging over my garage. Won’t be on much as lots of cleaning to do but everyone is safe here which is important.

Just one spot in the backyard, it’s all over….lol

Good Morning! - from a place where the birds are already picking off the Mountain Ash berries and flying south from. Birds are smart.

I suppose Willie is travelling for a holiday, Gary is getting swept away with Fiona, Sherrel seems MIA along with Karl; Joe say's he's falling apart and Louis won't retire and sit down. Mel will be going broke, trying to pay for the upkeep on this place with less customers.

Yesterday, I pencilled in some roads; Main Street in particular. 5" wide takes up a-lot of real estate, but, it's gotta have the opposing driving lanes and parallel parking. I'll have sidewalk on both sides, with the retail buildings on the south side left to the imagination.
My first attempts at making sidewalks (shown) will not be used.

This is going to be the B/A service station with OK used cars, just like what was in my hometown at one time:

I've decided to make the ramps over the crossing out of balsa. That's what I'll be doing today. Might try pouring the drywall mud road, as well. Just to see how it's going to work.
This winter should prove to be a busy modelling season. I have lots of canyon, rail bridge, and structures to build. I don't care how cold it gets outside, but, I'm hoping I don't have to shovel too much snow.

Have a great day!
It looks awesome! But have to get back to work.

Some people just like the sound of their own voice, I probably would have said sod it, and smacked him.
Never having served, I was following the lead of our US Marine command at the table. I'm very surprised the gent was still standing. But, you don't get to full bird status (real Colonel) without learning the political side of dealing with others.

Sherrel - is "nicht hier". He apparently self-censored himself after the discussions regarding immigration were removed for being political, which they were not. But someone must have complained.
No sure why someone would have complained, I didn't see it as political, but rather Sherrel simply expressing an opinion, quite a few of us have gone a lot closer to the political edge, myself included and haven't been censored, perhaps someone felt it simply wasn't appropriate.
I hope his "self imposed exile" comes to an end soon, I kinda miss him.

He probably was getting quite annoyed, but being aware of where he was and the company he was in, decided this guy wasn't worth the trouble. Being a Colonel would have helped, simply because he would have dealt with far worse than an opiniated know it all in his career.
