How to turn them into modelers, railroaders, gamers, etc... Good luck hatching an interest with the soon-to-be Jr. Engineer.
He actually handles a Protothrottle very well and has since he was 4. But after 15-20 minutes he’s done. This is the first interest expressed though in building anything. I found a couple small structures he could build and we add to the grain complex on the layout. That might give him ownership…

Good Morning All. Clear, calm and 70° this morning. Headed for 94° today with lots of sunshine. Pool temperature this morning had dipped to 83°, but with a full day of sunshine it will rise back to 85°. 82° is still comfortable for me, but my wife likes 84° or higher. I am concerned about these lower nighttime temperatures and the effect they will have on my onions that are stored out in the shed. They will begin to sprout if it gets too cool for any extended time. I will have to be vigilant and remove them as soon as they do, and then chop and freeze them.
Pop-up thunderstorm came within a few miles while I was in the pool yesterday afternoon, but never got closer than 5 miles away.

I was able to mow again yesterday in the early afternoon, did the backyard around the pool and the firewood stacks. I'll resume today after the dew dries, this time on the major acreage called the front yard. Meanwhile with the well timed rains recently, my hayfield is looking very nice. Should get a very good and profitable second cutting.
I'm getting the smoker ready for smoking a brisket flat today. I'll be using pecan wood today just because I haven't tried that wood before. I have a supply of pecan, oak, maple and peach from trees in the yard. I use the maple and peach on pork and poultry, and the oak and now pecan on beef. If you can't make it by, I'll report back in the morning.

Thanks for the likes and comments regarding the MR I pictures yesterday; Sherrel, Smudge, Dave B, Guy, Hughie, Troy, Louis, Patrick, Gary, Rick, Tom, Chad, Joe, Tom O.

I got started on a new project out in the train shed yesterday. I have been wanting to build another structure after a long hiatus. So I started this one.

The intent is to put it in this area which is my next project area, now that the extension to downtown Ft Wish is essentially completed.

I intend to put it on the left next to the Ramones Storage where the gray structure is. All of the structures to the right of Ramones are just being stored there. City Hall and 7-11 will probably end up in this scene when done.

Since Pikestuff used parts from another kit and just cast them in a different color, I had to cut out a notch in each long wall. Then I added doors and windows

I thought that I had taken pictures of before and after, but apparently not.

Dave B - I also have a cane on standby that I haven't used yet. It's a traditional one over 80 years old that belonged to my Grandfather. I replaced the rubber tip in 2018 so my wife could use it after her knee replacement surgeries. She uses it now to activate the I-Robot vacuum cleaner so she doesn't have to bend over!

Sherrel - I don't know about adding Freon yourself, but locally Auto Zone will add it for you if you purchase it from them. Cost is the same.
Guy - Wow! 100° in Alberta! You probably don't get that often.
I think that we all have torn up track at one time or another. It's the main reason that I don't ballast for 6-8 months after I first attach it and test run everything for a while. I'm with Dave on the DC only.
Tom O - My son was banned from screens back in the late 90's for a month. I don't remember what the reason, but it had nothing to do with spending money or porn. I think that he cursed at his mother. The results were amazing, we never had a recurrence of whatever it was.

I am probably jinxed now after reading about everyone's mower problems.
Today is National Skyscraper Day. Around here they are known as grain elevators.
Everybody have a safe and awesome Labor Day weekend.
willie
Do not fear. I cut 3 acres yesterday and both mower and operator were fine

Today is supposedly "National Cinema Day". Cinemark in our area has all shows and showings at $3 per. Unfortunately I didn't go look at the availability until most shows are only scattered individual seats or the front row or two (the front section). But we did get tickets for th Top Gun movie, which we havent seen yet for 9:30pm. My son has seen it and didn't want to come.

Wed afternoon and Thursday the plumbers were digging trenches and laying pipes. They aren't done yet and will come back Tuesday. They have a 4x10 work week so weren't there Friday. Friday I did do some digging under a footing for the exit of the drains out of the house. I'm trying to help with digging and stuff to speed it along.

Good Day Jents & Jaz.
Thought I'd pop in for a cup and maybe ask a question about an idea I have thinkin about. I enjoy thinking of new ways to do things and my railroad is a testing ground sortof. I have been wiring some more turnouts and while I"m not prepared to go with Tortise, I dont like the look of the usual snap machines. In the picture below, is a small thermometer coil. Am I the only one that sees a possibility of using one as a switch machine? I dont have the electronics wizardry in me to control the temperature or current flow to one of these.

Also, just a shot of the week ahead of us. Been a long hot summer.

Dave... Those things are made of two metal strips as you may know. When heated ( convection for normal operation ) one of the metal strips bends more than the other and the coil gets smaller or larger depending. Current is probably not an option as the amount needed to cause change is probably more than you might think. Temp ( forced convection ) on the other hand would require a heating element very near the strips with the whole thing enclosed in some sort of oven. They definitely would be s-l-o-w in operation, faster with more temp. Then there is the other side of the coin, how are you going to cool them off so they would be almost as fast as heating? Guess that some sort of cooling fan directed into the oven might work. So you have some sort of enclosure, something to heat, something to cool, control and power for the whole thing. Control would need some sort of temp shut down as you don't want things going into some sort of spiral up for the heat side. l would think a Tortise would be much much cheaper and easier.

I don't like the Tortise either. I bought some years ago @ $5 each, got 25 or 30, don't remember. Now they are gold. I have been looking at the small motors that are used with RC planes and such. Even ordered 25 of them ( 20 bucks ifn I remember ) and am currenltly looking at simple control for them. They are way less than the Tortise and that should also include the control. It is only money ... right?

My grass is cut, front and back. It was wet with the morning dew, but no sun to overheat me. I had to take many breaks to clean the wet clippings from the underside of the deck. That worked out because I still have no stamina yet. All the breaks did me good.

I love my little 18" electric mower. My yard is only 50'x100'. I bought it in 2017 and it still works great. I don't remember what brand it is. I picked the lightest mower I could get. My back, shoulders and hips are ok with it.

I first began using an electric mower in 2005. I never run out of gas, and it is never hard to start. Once I got used to the extension cord, I didn't have any trouble with it. Cut moving away from the outlet and the cord never gets in the way.

I took my shower and settled onto the couch to watch the afternoon westerns. Was I lucky! I caught the first episode of the "Lone Ranger", and I had never seen it before.

The baby birds have won again! That makes three in a row and seven out of the last ten. I'm so proud of these young men!
Gunnar had a pair of doubles yesterday. Looks like he can hit Major League pitching. He looked solid at shortstop as well.

I'm looking forward to the Ravens opening their season against the New York Jets a week from Sunday!

Alan - I didn't mean to leave you out earlier, but those PA's look really good. The Lark train was impressive as well. I don't do any passenger trains, but I like looking at them.
No sweat Willie! :) Sometimes I wish I wasn't so much into passenger. it's expensive, it will teach you the meaning of patience, and the train will find every little sin you committed when you laid your track! Thing is, the trains are so awesome I can't help myself.

ALAN - That is a Great Train! 15 cars - is that correct?
Sorry about the mower, sort of been there, done that - but not quite to that extent.
Loved your take on it though!
Yep. The full consist is 19 cars, and I have 17 of them, but the open house running rules are that your train has to fit on a siding, locos and all (open house only) so I was running 15 as I will for open house. That's the other bad thing about passenger modeling: they chew up a ton of real estate! Glad you liked it!

All right, the brisket flat has been on three hours, smoked with Pecan wood. Temperature is 161°, shooting for 185°-190°. The bark looks good and I just wrapped it in aluminum foil for the remainder of it's cooking time, about 2.5-3 hours more. Of course I stopped putting Pecan on the fire about 45 minutes ago, since the foil negates the usefulness. Added more chunk charcoal to continue the heat at 275°. Should have taken an "in progress" picture, but my wife already thinks I am crazy; besides the camera is out in the train shed and I never think of using the phone! Phones are for talking to other people, cameras are for taking pictures. I am old fashioned!!!;) In the interim, I just finished making some homemade coleslaw using cabbage and red onions from the garden. Cabbage keeps a long time in the fridge; I picked it in May. Onions as I posted earlier keep in the heat in the shed until temperatures are consistently in the 60's Carrots and Red Bell Pepper came from Kroger. I'll be making sauteed asparagus to go with it.

Good afternoon. Been absent again for a few days. I did get a hold of the surgeons office and have rescheduled the operation for Sept 21. I have to make a few other appointments and a pre-surgery Covid test. What a bunch of crap. Guess I'll be typing one handed. That doesn't sound good as I have a hard time with two hands.

Went over to visit a friend in Idaho yesterday and to meet the dachshund that I may adopt in the future. Still warm but the future forecast is finally showing some reasonable temps next week.

I noticed a few posts about the price of auto parts, especially the luxury vehicles, BMW, Mercedes, Land Rover and such. I was blown away last week about the price of Wiper Blades for my 1972 Chevy truck. Used to replace the pair for under $10. Was $35 bucks for the basic blade. Holy crap! The truck hadn't been used on the road for years. I just moved it a few feet to mow under it. The blade part of the blades were non existant and al that was left was the rubber part that mounted on the metal part of the blade frame. Fot the most part, the parts aren't near as expensive as new cars. Probably more steel in the box than an entire new truck. I can open the hood and work on it.

James -I am so sorry to hear about your sister.

Curt - Like the photos. Looking forward top see how the new layout is coming along.

Todd - I stayed away from screwing around with my truck. It is a heavy duty 3/4 ton as they did not make 1 ton pickups back then. I had to break down and change the rims because nobody wanted to work on split rims any more. Stayed with as close as I could get to the old 7.50/16 tires. That truck worked. had a slide in camper on it that we used when the kids were young and hauled a lot of fire wood in it. Cut logs to 10 foot long until I was over the cab and then16 foot over the cab. @ cords a trip. Can't see the lift kits and knobby tires. I did a lot of side hilling in the mountains and wanted the center of gravity as low as possible. The ground clearance isn't any more than the axles or differential.

Willie - Like the photos as usual. I have the original merchants row. Wish plastic was available when I got it.

Sherrel - Go to a shop for the A/C. You need it where you are. Had to laugh when the guy from the Cali utilities was wanting people to cut down of their electrical usage and not to charge their EV's.

Chad - That train room is really coming along. Now all you have to do is to put a house on the basement to keep it dry.

Patrick - I am happy to not have a lawn to mow any more. I have hear people whining about having to mow a small lawn in a subdivision lot. Mowed 2 acres for 45 years. Probably could have gone to the east coast and back.

Ken - Trying to sell a vehicle to a car dealership is a laugh. You described exactly what they'll do for an estimate. A band of thieves.

Alan - Liked that video. Those PA units are sweet. Modeling passenger trains can be a lot more expensive. Saw where some of the Northern Pacific passenger cars from Walthers were on Ebay for twice if not more that original retail. I would like to put them up for sale but they are in an unopened moving box in one of my closets.

My NASCAR race is under a rain delay but should restart soon.

Here are more photos from that archives.

Good evening. It's clear and 85.
I'm staying at home this holiday weekend, and away from the ID10Ts on the road. In years past, when we stayed home instead of traveling somewhere, my wife and I would take advantage of the time to view a movie, or catch up on a tv series we both liked. Deciding to continue that tradition, I clicked on the television, and scrolled through the channel selections and suggested shows to watch.
"Suggested for You:
To Dance With the White Dog".

Gee...Thanks...
