Running Bear's October 2026 Coffee Shop

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

Good Morning All. Clear and 56°, with a north wind of 1 mph. Next Tuesday's chance of rain has been removed from our forecast; maybe Halloween???

Had a good grocery trek yesterday, store was only out of one item. Aisles still filled with re-stock carts and pallets, but I have gotten used to that now. Customer satisfaction survey is now AI driven! Not that I think that it will make any difference; as long as I get my 50 extra fuel points for filling it out.
I've occasionally posted over the past few years about the state highway that was being improved and widened starting about 6 miles from my house to the Interstate; for a total of 6 miles. It appears to be completed now. So, wandering through cattle ranches/horse farms/pastures and wheat fields is a nice 5 lane (center left-turn) road complete with sidewalks. Note that there might be 20 houses along this initial 5 mile stretch to use these sidewalks, and most of them are about 1/4 mile back from the road itself. Biggest complaint from the local Facebook page is the current speed limit of 45 mph! Back before the improvements, it was a two-lane blacktop with minimal shoulders but a speed limit of 55 mph! So, the sheriff's department now makes good use of that center-left turn lane to station radar enforcement units. Note that there are just 4 intersections along this 5 mile stretch that this lane can be used for, but it extends the entire length. That, the sidewalks and the drainage system (installed because there are now curbs), probably doubled the overall cost of this project.
RANT over!
After lunch and a nap, I woke up with the most excruciating neck/shoulder pain that I can recall. Sure put a damper on the rest of the day. Not sure what caused it. I did a number of stretching exercises and the massager and eventually it went away about five hours later. I almost had to use a heavy-duty Tramadol, but resisted the urge. I'm just not too keen on using opioid type drugs.

Contemplating on today's activities until I see whether this pain returns. I know that a load of laundry is a definite.

Despite the pain, I did make it out to the train shed yesterday for some modeling. I trimmed up all of the shingle rows and the peak looked like this.

My plan was/is to add a piece of 3/32" x 3/32" stripwood into that groove like this.

Worked as planned and the color match is almost spot on.

On my previous build of this structure, I added "rafter tails" to the underside of the roof.

I'm leaving them off this build to differentiate this building from the older one. Makes it a lot more simple to build without them.
I did some other stuff, but I am having a whole lot of trouble with the forum right now, so I'll wait for a better time to post!

Kusojiji - I don't think that crew members wore uniforms since the 1940's. What I see is typical blue-collar dress, flannel shirts and blue jeans.
Marco - Most 6-axle diesels will easily run on 22" radius curves, but as Tom O posted, there is some overhang.

Put me in the camp that would like to see the "human" element return, instead of this flaky on/off behavior of the forum.

The late bassist for Spooky Tooth and Humble Pie, Greg Ridley was born on this day in 1947. Weird Al Yankovic is 67 today.

Everyone have a great Friday.

$3200 for Apples new Foldable IPhone. Are people f…ing nuts??? Even the least expensive is $2000.

256GB: $1,999
512GB: $2,199
1TB: $2,399
2TB: Up to $3,199 (depending on configuration)
Look at the other makers foldables. Same general price range. Cutting edge is expensive.

You’d be fine with 256gb unless you’re editing large media files or you have a trillion photos to store. All memory is expensive right now as production is going into AI data centers. AI is memory and storage intensive.

While a foldable is cool, for most people I think the standard form factor phone is the better choice.

TomO praying here for you all.
Marco Perhaps add a small triangular section in the corner to give you a bit more area in an unused space to allow the larger curve?
My back has finally eased up a bit, hopefully can make the last night of our Mission's Conference tonight. G'niece Nataley's 18th Birthday today...how can she be that old? My Missus took her car to the dealer for an oil change this morning and is gonna bring back luch from Panda Express, I'm kinda liking this having my own personal Uber/Doordash driver. And yes, I did tell her that already...and got "the Look".
Found a Microtrains Boxcar that recognizes the Silver Star Medal, bought it as my Dad earned that in the Korean War. We didn't know it until after his death and found it in his records. He told me very little about it, I know he was there when the Chinese came across.
So, thank you to all who have served our Nation in either war or peacetime.

They'll all be obsolete in three years or less so you'll upgrade.

My Amazon order of 1K pack of BUNN commercial coffee filters arrived, and a box of 1,400 2"x2" gun cleaning patches that do double duty as track cleaning patches.

It's much easier using those as opposed to a random rag. Especially under catenary where I can clip them into a hemostat if necessary to reach the hard spots. The come in a handy plastic box that can be used for other things when the patches run out.

‘tis true that they get old and we upgrade. I typically upgrade at 4 years though sometimes do go longer. My daughter’s phone is almost 6 years old. The model is 6 years old now but she got it half way through the model year. Her problem is mostly that the storage is exhausted and she stores a lot of stuff including photos.

The more expensive they get the longer I hold on to them.

Well, howdy there internet peeps and those counting one way or another

(Insert Blondie Ear worm above)

It's Troy again.

Best wishes and positive vibes to Tom's Terry, as well as those who are seeking healing of one sort or another.

Speaking of which, the PT showed me how much strength I had lost in my visit with him yesterday. Not sure I want to drive two hours and stay overnight in a hotel room —outpatient surgery and I won't be allowed to sit in a car for the 2hour drive home — (according to the AI). But it's percolating through my brain that the possibility is there.

In the meantime, I'm hitting the Teeter Table and the Nerve Flossing routine pretty hard.

In Lord Fuzzbutt news... still peeing outside the box. Overnight he hit the brand new entry mat by the front door. The one to replace the old carpet he ruined with several days of peeing.

Seems, he doesn't want to take the stairs, and wants the big heating pad wife has for him in her office. Not the little one down in the basement.

BUT... When I jiggle the treat bag in the basement, he comes right down.

We're trying to watch, and keep track of his box usage. Wife still insists on NO box on her level of the house. She's barefoot too much of the time and doesn't want the litter stuck to her feet. Yes, we have a large litter mat for right outside the box. He still tracks it everywhere.

As for hobby stuff, I got the gaming demo forces and terrain almost finished.

Added the ink & alcohol wash to the stonework and the figure bases.

Since the pic, I painted the edges of the bases, added magnets to keep them upright in transport, and had the AI take the very basic stat cards the army builder software app produces, and had a new, graphically pleasing stat card with the special rules added.

Time to go flip the last load of laundry, then get my walk in.

Probably doing Giordano's pizza tonight. We'll see what the wife finally decides.

Once the newness craze wears off the phone companies will offer discounts and promotions on them.

Just some experimental information. I have found over the past couple of years that if you mow your lawn before a heavy frost/freeze the grass will dramatically slow down in growing. I mowed last Saturday, that night it got down to 34 degrees and no need to mow even though we've had sun and temps in the mid 60's all week. The neighbors that mowed 2-3 days before the frost or the day after are mowing today.
