Good morning from chilled So. Central Wisconsin. It is 31f degrees feeling like 19. We may approach mid 40’s this afternoon but the winds are running in the mid teens again today.

I have an appointment with the Clinical Nutritionist for my diabetes primarily and weight loss as the secondary reason the insurance uses. I will start another weathering project today, I need to learn to say no. But, this may turn into as much fun as the last one and move along quickly

enjoy the day

Morning all,

Flipped off the AC yesterday and started the furnace. Didn't quite dip below freezing, but 33° is awful close. Supposed to be 52° today with 26° tomorrow morning. Then back in the mid 80's and the AC back on for the weekend. Typical Kansas weather. A chance for rain nest Monday, but that will change before then. We need it as bad as California does.

Reminds me, I'll be having the service company calling soon to schedule my annual fall visit. They didn't change the humidifier pad last year, so I took it upon my self to change it in March, just before I shut the system down for the AC season. Should still be OK. They like to change my filters, but the service agreement doesn't cover the 5" filters. Last time they quoted me $60 for the filter, but I have a stash of them. I get them for about $25 at Menard's with the 11% off. Exactly the same filter. I also get the humidifier pads at the same place the service company does at less than 1/2 the price. I have those in a stash as well. Bought the American Standard unit in 2014, six months after we bought the house. Less than the same Trane unit, although 90% of the parts have Trane part numbers. makes you go hhhuummmm......(I know American Standard is made by Trane).

Good Morning All. Clear and a chilly 43°. I'm watching things outside and I will turn on the sprinkler in the garden if a frost might become imminent. Probably not this morning, but possibly tomorrow if it gets as cold as predicted. Applying water usually will prevent a light frost from killing those tomato plants.

Today starts with a visit to the dental hygienist. Still pisses me off that I have to pay full price when I have eight implants and nine crowns that don't require cleaning.

Following up on the post that I made yesterday regarding my waste hauler and their valiant recycling efforts, their driver told me once that due to overloads, about a third of the time he bypasses the facility and goes directly to the landfill. He has also told me that the steel/iron removal apparatus usually doesn't work.
Some interesting discussions regarding AprilAire yesterday. I'll have to keep them in mind if I ever switch from wood heat to a ducted central unit. I know that the time might be coming in the next 15 ears or so.

Thanks for all of the comments and reactions to yesterday's posts on the projects and the figure painting summary.

Two projects out in the train shed yesterday, as I continue marking things off my rather extensive list. First I finished up some bicycles for use at D's Diner.

The tabs on the bottoms of the tires fit into slots on the model, unless I want to use them elsewhere, then I will cut them off.
Then I was going to add people to the inside of the printing company in the Maultown Industrial District.

This structure has interior floors with machinery made from old circuit boards.

IMG_2221.JPG

However the lower (2nd) floor had fallen down and was on the ground.
IMG_2219.JPG

Looks like some modification to this and the top floor as well in order to get them more permanent. They are both cardboard floors and are supported by pegs on the wall.
IMG_2223.JPG

Not a big deal. I'll use some pieces of Evergreen styrene to make proper floor supports and add the figures to the highly visible windows. It's perfect for those crappily painted Chinese figures

Ken (D&J) - You're so right about the damn low flow toilets. I only send sewage (blackwater) into the septic tank, and water flow is indeed an issue. I have to use a bladder and hose to blast it through about once a month. I didn't have any issues for over 35 years until we got those damn toilets when I remodeled the two bathrooms. Double-flushing helps a little, but the sewer line misses that "WHOOSH" produced by the old units. No problems with the shower or other graywater (washer etc) since I just run it out into the field. The dishwasher provides enough hot flow to keep that line free of soap and grease build-up.
Louis - Glad to read that you and your family are holding up after the sudden departure of your Mom.

Today is National No Beard Day; I will not be celebrating. I have had this beard continuously since 1974. There's also a couple of birthdays today of folks that I can relate to, although they both have passed on. Today would have been Dawn Wells 84th birthday, she played Mary Ann on Gilligan's Island. It also would have been Chuck Berry's 95th birthday.

"This breaking news just in", "Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead!"

Everybody have a great day. Keep on Rockin' and Reelin' as Chuck would say.

Good morning all,

It is a chilly 21° but no wind and clear. Somehow I did not have to scrape the Suburban this morning, however when I got to work all the trucks here had frosty windshields. I guess I got going before the frost formed!

Todd - I ordered my concrete for our car port, sidewalk, and apron project. They quoted me a price of$185 per yard, but with the fuel surcharge etc. ended up should cost me about $220, we need 6.25 yards, they are coming Friday afternoon (we are supposed to get back up to 60 that day). Will be using the Fiber Reinforced product.

Troy - Old school we would use the dehumidifier in the basement - summer. Winter, a humidifier if necessary on the main floor. That is a fool proof methodology. Our dehumidifier after 40 years still worked like it did when new.

Willie - thanks for posting your formula (yesterday) on painting people! Great method there.

Low flow shower head - code for replace shower head

Good morning!

The only people who ever phone me, are people who want me to work for them and fix their problems. It's fallout from owning a trades service company year's back. I don't even get those calls from the nice people in India, just work, work, work.
Yesterday, the call came from an old fella having issues with his osmosis system. The fact is, I like helping out the old fellas, and they always seem to have money and are generous. I came home with quite a-bit of welcome hobby cash.

A small package came in the mail yesterday, from the Miniprint company. I didn't realize the sasquatch was a large breasted female when I ordered it. I believe it's modelled after my ex.

Anyway, she'll fit nicely on the layout somewhere.
Plus, there are some owls, a photographer, and new oil tanks for the oil dealership to sell.

I broke two tank cars, accidentally running them off the end of my unfinished track. It was a 43" drop to the floor.
Here's one of them:

Frankly, I'm a-bit cranky about that. Since then, I've put in a temporary stop on the end of the tracks.

Well, I just dropped in for a coffee. Time to go get something fixed.
Have a great day!

Good morning gang!

It's a wet cool almost chilly morning at about 37 degrees. I hate that it rained last night and this morning. Cold and damp sucks!

I am working from home today. Spent a few hours already reviewing project budgets etc. Working on an new project for a proposal/estimate review etc. I am taking a break from that for now.

If some of you have been following our very own TomO you may know he does some great weathering work. He was commissioned to do a fleet of (9) 2 bay covered hoppers for me. He did a fantastic job. I will be receiving them in a few short days. About the only thing I did wrong was I sent him the cars with out changing out the couplers on some of the cars and I think one or two cars to metal wheels. No biggie I can do that when I get them. It will be a note to myself for the next project ;) Anyways I love Tom's work and I like that he takes his time and allows for constructived critiques from all of you and myself of course. I can say patience is the best policy for letting someone do their mastery of work. One thing I have always learned in that patience plays a roll in anyone's talent and work. I know Tom and I will continue our relationship as I do appreciate him working with me. So if you have not seen his work check it out here: https://modelrailroadforums.com/for...ng-stock-a-continous-thread.34411/post-544864

So thank you TomO!

In other news I still continue to find little deals here and there. I have a few more things coming. I am slowing down on the acquisition side (a little bit anyways) and will be moving my focus to over to construction. I have started organizing and cleaning the train room in the last 3 days. I will be putting time in today as well. I have to get things set up for track laying soon. I do want to do a few more quick runs on 5 locomotives. I got them on the program track this past weekend and tweaked them with JMRI. I may make another run to JP's Hobbies and get more building materials like styrene and such. These are pennies on the dollar at 50% off. So I really should get all that he has left. I may not need it now but damn sure will later. The beams and such will make great loads for the flat cars etc.

I did get another Walthers Cornerstone building, Walthers 933-4035 Glacier Industrial Sands Kit that I will rename it of course but I wanted this for a while to go with my company JR's Big Stones & Aggregates for the layout.

Well the rest of the week is predicted and forecasted for cooler temperatures. I hope to get my boat finished up Saturday and put into hibernation sadly. I still have more work to do on stacking wood as well. Almost ready for old man winter. I suspect that white stufff will be early this year. I just have a feeling about that.

7 more days before my older sister Becky has her heart surgery. I am so nervous about it. Like a cat in a room full of rocking chairs. All I can do is wait and pray and hope all goes well. Mom and Pops are worried as well.

Well I may have to cook something in the ocen to warm up the kitchen. I have not turned on the furnace yet. Holding out for November at least but I may be burning wood this weekend. We shall see.

Well I think I heard the mail hit my door. I am gonna go see what I got in today.

Ya'll have a good rest of the day!

For much of September and October we have not had the A/C or the heat on. With temperatures in the low 40s at night it won't be long.

One of the benefits of buying tires from Costco is they inflate the tires with nitrogen. It makes them more resistant to temperature changes.

Ouch! that smarts! A Tangent too. Might as well trash an expensive one! Not to worry. From what I see, it's all fixable.

I thought so, too; didn't look that bad. Sometimes just hearing the model hit the floor can easily create anxiety.

I crashed into a tree once with a snowmobile. I thought it was wrecked. I got a ride home, when I came back with a shovel to evaluate the damage it was just a bent bumper and no broken pieces! talk about relief.

Afternoon All,

Started out with a few chores then headed to the trainroom. I attached the 4 resistors and 5 wire leads to one signal and tested. I could only see one of the 4 lights. I pondered this for awhile knowing the solders were good. I turned off the overhead and desk lights, then sure enough I could barely see the other 3. I knew this wouldn't work for me so I cut the 680 ohm 0.25 watt resistors that I had and changed them to the provided 390 ohm 0.5 watt ones I found under the foam in the box the signals came in...duh  😣. Guess what? now you can see all of them.

After lunch I chauffeured the wife to Wally World.

For those in the know about resistors, I get the ohm rating but really don't understand about what the different wattage's do.

Mike- Happy Birthday 🎂.

Joe- Nice 1:1 photo (even if it's PC)😂.

Louis- Beautiful setiment about your Mother.

Willie- Nice details and ingenious re-use of old material. I too am celebrating by not cutting off my beard.

Guy- Oops!:(. We have all been there, done that.

I hope everyone has a good night.

Technically our A/C is still on but the temp has been moderate enough that the house barely gets to where it comes on and then it rarely comes on as it is easy to keep at that spot. I love this time of year, utility wise

I too love the utility bills this time of year. We have 2 houses and a pole barn, each with their own meter. This past month's electric bills totaled up to less than $300 for all 3 combined. Back in August, our main house was over $300 alone. I try to fill up the propane tank this time of year to keep the cash outflow from yo-yoing. It gets filled 2x a year... Spring and Fall. October and March

Resistor Wattage - amount of power it can withstand without loosing its smoke.

If the driver for your signals outputs 5V and 0V, and you want ... say a max 15mA to light them enough to see - Red Led forward voltage is about 1.4V ... so [ R = V/I ] ... ( 5V - 1.4V )/0.015 would be about a 240 Ohm resistor that needs to withstand less than 1/16Watt: [ P=I squared R ] ... I^2 * 240 = 0.054 Watts. You are overkill on the 1/2 and 1/4 Watt resistors! And if the driver's output is not continuous DC; your power will be even less depending on the duty cycle of the output wave. Oh, check the datasheet for the different Led forward voltages, makes a difference on the color.

Dave: I don't remember ifn I stated the pad size - 36x40 with 5" pour. Over 8K with fuel surcharge and truck time ( what ever that is ).

Wish somebody was here and I would roll my own ( except for the crete ). Ground work is $1000ish a day; 2 days guessed. New tractor is supposed to be here on Friday, somewhat good weather for the next 5 days after that.... Could get the pad in before winter.
