Good Morning All. Happy Halloween. Clear skies here with 49°, headed back up to 76° later today. Still looking at the same forecast, rain Tuesday and Wednesday, possible freeze Thursday and Friday nights and mid 60's for the high after that. I have been able to avoid using the wood burning heater so far this season, but that looks like it will end Tuesday. This is the first year that I can remember that I didn't need to use it until November! I love that thing. 41 years of heating our house completely and the only maintenance is the yearly chimney cleaning and replacing the cap.
I have a young contractor friend coming out this morning to help me clean the chimney for the heater, and install a new stainless steel chimney cap to replace the old galvanized one that disintegrated recently. The galvanized ones last about 10 years before they need replacing. Wife doesn't want me climbing up on the roof any more. Says that I am too old...I'm not as old as she is!;) He is also going to trim a couple of oak tree branches that are a potential problem over the roof.

Thanks for all of the comments and reactions regarding yesterday's pictures; Tom O, Christian, Guy, OB Ken, Joe, Sherrel, Hughie, Louis, Lee, IB Ken, Curt, Rick, Karl, Mikey.

I'll take a couple of eggs over easy and a stack of sausage patties this morning Flo. OJ and a buttered whole wheat English Muffin on the side. You can leave the candy corn in the kitchen.

Almost didn't make it out to the train shed yesterday because I was caught up in so many outdoor tasks. I didn't completely ignore the Ramone's project, I drilled all of the fence post holes, but didn't go any further. I decided to run trains instead.
That means that I have to go back to the archives for a few pictures today. I showed a bookstore the other day, but that's not the only one on the layout. I have some pictures of Buck's Book Store, a Smaltown USA kit that I built a few years ago. These pictures were taken in a photogenic place near the workbench instead of in it's layout location.

OB Ken - Congratulations on the raise.
Jerry - Condolences on the loss of your friend. You certainly did have a bad day/week.
Tom O - Speaking of work and girls, I always subscribed to the philosophy that you don't get any honey where you get your money. It was interesting what some of them would do to attempt to wrangle a raise. I saw it bring down a few guys over the years. I do admit to being a hands-off dirty old man though.
Guy - I hear your pain regarding sorting photos. I have been trying to do that myself, although I can only devote short spans of time on that task. I see that others have already answered your query regarding the coal hopper in the gravel train.
Joe - Interesting take on the job interviews. When I had to interview candidates for supervisory or management jobs, I always looked for people who could manage things. I could train folks the window manufacturing business, but you cannot train management skills. I always included one "off the wall" question just to see their reaction and quickness. I fortunately never had to interview hourly factory employees.
Lee - Great looking project.
IB Ken - I rarely edit out the ceiling eyesores myself; we all have them. I do sometimes edit out the beer bottles though! ;)
Robert - I like the Santa Fe engine pictures as well as your scenery. You're modeling an era just before mine.
Curt - Tough decision to make. I would go with wiring the exterior lights separately.
Mikey -
Willie- Do you have some odd ball "trade in" to display with a "for sale" sign, like a road grader, a steam roller, an airplane or sailboat?
Yes, several of them that I salvaged from my son's Matchbox collection that he left us. I'm still contemplating what I will do with the junk piles and other ground level parts of the scene. I am looking at a car on blocks among other things. I am just taking a couple of days off this project to look at all of my other options for detailing.
Terry - Good luck this coming week. In 43 years, I worked through four ownership changes at my company. Fortunately no internal changes were made until 14 years after the last one. I was relieved of my active duties, primarily because they needed to look at the future without Willie. I hung around for two years essentially doing nothing until I was ready to retire at 63.
Troy - I would guess that next week is going to be apple butter time at your place. Wife off work and 25 lbs. of apples???

Everybody have a great Sunday. Stay safe while you're out trick or treating tonight, unless it was last night in your neighborhood.

Good Morning!

It's that time of year where I have to condition my blood to accept the cooler temperatures. Now, that I must walk a dog everyday, the acceptance of the cool should happen fairly quick. It's only 16F on this fine Sunday, and I find it chilly. Don't look like we'll be getting snow for another week or so.

Starting tomorrow or Tuesday, I'll be going hunting for awhile. All I want is a doe for the meat. My trophy hunting days are long past. I have sufficient tags to harvest three does, or a buck and two does. The bucks will be in rut, though, so they are not worth the effort. A buck in rut is nearly unpalatable.

Terry - I feel sorry for you. Good benefits are everything; so much more important than a high wage. I'm still feeding off my corporate RSP's, even though I quit working as an employee for someone in 2010. Now I'm on the wife's corporate plan, and at least get dental and vision done for free; plus, she has a fairly good RRSP program. - I've always felt that if a group of employee's takes strike action, they should do it for benefits over wage disputes.

Thankyou to Paul and Terry for going through efforts to answer my hopper question. After those answers, I did a bit more research myself.
The car is indeed a Trinity Industries aluminum hopper and very probably ex-BN. I can't seem to find a lot of photos on the net, and none in RR.Net. I might just put some photos into RR.net... I have quite a few of that car.
RROX is a part of Park Paving, out of Edmonton, Alberta. They are taking aggregate materials out of the Whitecourt area to supply the greater Edmonton market.
Here's another photo of that car, taken in spring of this year:
Hopper_RROX 1187_05-10-2021.jpg

The only other photo I'm going to post today, is a pic of this fine fellow, who observed me taking photographs of his train from an area that people normally don't go. He's just seen me, and he's thinking 'What the 'bad word'!'.

Thanks Willie. Hope your doing well. I’m just amazed how far along you layout is going looks great

Happy Halloween global modelers from an island in Paradise. It is63f degrees at 3:44am heading to 83. A tough day to handle. It is 46 back in the capital area of Wisconsin going to 50. Guess where I prefer to be.

Yesterday I got talked into being the fourth in my brother’s group. One of them actually was in contact with Covid so is quarentined and is unvaccinated. The 3 I played with are fully boostered. P-Oed my brother because I played too good. Shot a 79 and for the 1st time on a course in 2.5years that was pretty good. I have always been good tee to green but terribly bad on the greens. Yesterday I was decent. Brother said after, it’s going to be tough getting shots after that outing. I don’t care as I don’t gamble anymore without my wife being around. I also told him the last 3 months I have been hitting balls into the simulator, but no putting. The last handicap I played with was a 9. Far cry from the 2 I played with from about 18 to 40 when I went from playing 3 days a week to maybe 3-4 times a year in group outings. SteveJ will understand and nope, I never wore a kilt playing.

I did look yesterday at all the packages I have sent to the brother’s house. I may not have a layout here but I may have more modeling supplies.

I did see Martha Radantz of ABCNews here yesterday. She is doing a series on Climate change and the erosion of the Maui beaches due to higher water levels.

I have to get used to this time change. Getting up at 3-4am makes me very crabby and tired later. I tried napping yesterday after golf but Terry had to wake me after 3 hours for dinner.

I have to come back later today to catch up on the diner news.

Have a good one
TomO

Welcome to Sunday from Southern Oregon! Finally made it down here, but I see I'm way late for a big ol' cinnamon roll, waved, with a cup o coffee. A couple of raisin muffins please Flo with that cup of coffee, thanx.
I got wrapped up with a major file cabinet re-organization thing, trashing, consolidating, organizing, filing.....pretty much done, just a few more folders to put in the safe.
Thanks too every body that commented, liked, and read my last post.
Curt...Thank You for that! Well, you have the numbers right, but the order would be 1967. Man, that seems like a long time ago in a land far away!
Guy...Thanks much, appreciate that!
Jaz...Indeed! I read that and my mind instantly went to the moment I was with her, searching the gray matter to see if I could remember mentioning that. No, I didn't. Good idea, no need to say anything. I was telling that to show how the timing of things, (life) work out. Same thing when I had my 35mm camera stolen. I had used it one day in the house, and I normally keep it in the pick up. When I had finished using it I put it on the shelf over the washer/dryer, I didn't put it back in the pick up because of the summer heat. The next day it was stolen. Ahh, Timing!
Joe...Thank You!
Hughie...Thank You!
IBKen...Thank You much! I'm still in a state of disbelief! Suppose I will be for awhile. Neat little station, I would go for early to mid 60's. I think "Union" had a face lift in/about 1966? The ball showed up in 67.
Willie...Thank You, appreciate that! It was a crazy week, but, got that all out of the way! o_O You've got those buildings looking good with some populous.

Fires for the most part have subsided, especially the Dixie fire. That monster burned a trainload of ground! And of course you could see this coming with winter, mud/rock/land slides. Both UP & BNSF have had service interruptions from same. In the mean time, here is some of the equipment that was at the Dixie fire. The one water car had been borate bombed. (pink one) I know at least two of the water cars are riveted ex Santa Fe tank cars w/center beams, bld date 1949. Caboose is the command station.

EVERY BODY HAVE A GREAT DAY!

Good morning. It's mostly cloudy and 45.
As I briefly mentioned Friday, I may be unwillingly changing careers. I'll know more on Wednesday, but the dealership I've worked for for well over a decade has been sold. HR for the new company is supposed to arrive Wednesday for us to fill out applications for continued employment with the new company. I've been through this several times over the years, and it has never ended well for the employees of the company being taken over.
We'll see if the trend continues.
One of the employees quit on the spot when he was told what was happening, and another one turned in his notice at the same time.
Best of luck to you, Terry. That's a really tough spot to be in and I hope things work out well for you.
OB Ken

Good morning all! 53 and mostly sunny headed up to 61 degrees for the day. I have the day off!
Thanks to all you congratulated me on the pay raise. It was a bit of a surprise and definitely improved my day. For a couple different reasons, I'm going to stay put for now instead of continuing my job search. I do plan to look again, but probably not until next year. I like what I do now for the most part, so it's all good.
Got some stuff to do here today and will probably listen to the NASCAR race on the radio while I do other things. Hope you all have a great day!
OB Ken

Greetings from SWCA where it will be 73F later on with mostly sunny! Three days running they have hit the high predicted - hard to believe.

JERRY - I hadn't commented before, but I too am sorry to hear of your friend's passing.
It is strange at times how life evolves around us. Here one day and gone the next.
Nice pic of the water tankers.

KEN - With the raise now = maybe you should purchase a comfortable pair of shoes so as to protect those feet from the concrete? (snicker, snicker) Sorry, couldn/t resist.

Francine - Some of JERRY"S deer-camp coffee this morning and a couple of MEL'S egg mcmuffins to go, please - have some errands to run this morning!

Last evening - The Spousal Unit and I attended the
Semi Finals of the Drumline competition this year in San Diego where #1 Grandson participated.
Good showing - His group managed to eke out the Number 2 spot.
We arrived back at the homestead sometime after 11 pm - cold, tired, and hungry!

TODAY IN HISTORY:
October 31, 1984
Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated near her residence by two Sikh security guards.
BBL - Happy Halloween sports fans. Boo on Atlanta winning last night's game!

Hot damn you just cannot catch a break can you :(

That book on the right, "Aircraft of World War II", looks familiar. I am pretty sure I have or had a copy of it at some point, or at least a similar one from the same author...

One book I have that I had as a teenage is called "Hitler's Luftwaffe", which has two parts -- a historical part with lots of photos in the front, and then a more encyclopedia part listing most all aircraft of the 3rd Reich, with color plates, photos, specs, etc. It was an awesome book. Good afternoon y'all. Weather is mostly cloudy with temperatures in the lower 60s. Not much going on yet.
I'm actually surprised that so many have posted, since my last yesterday evening. I have to go over the posts when I finish here.
Spent part of yesterday evening mining interesting photos, for sharing. I'll save them for the November coffee shop.

Terry: Best of luck. You need to remember that you have a marketable skill set...actually several marketable skill sets. Their H&R people will try to marginalize your skills for their benefit...don't let them get into your head. There is a real shortage of skilled labor in this country, and companies are paying premiums for skilled people.
'What the 'bad word'!'.
Guy: He's just pissed that someone observed him wearing that ridiculous reflective vest he has to wear .
Interesting take on the job interviews.
Willie: Way back when I was Road Foreman in DC, H&R requested that I interview a group of candidates for 1. Clerical Positions and 2 Trainmen positions. They sent me a list, and their pre-arranged appointment times. In their complete state of ignorance (or arrogance), they never pre arranged with me, of checked to see if I had the time available. When the time arrived, I "interviewed" 32 candidates, for an unknown position, without any specific guidance from H&R. I briefly described how the railroad works, that it was a 24-7 operation, and they could expect to work nights and weekends, and an extra list, in all weather conditions. I felt the most promising were the Veterans, and those that possessed some college level education. (Keeping in mind that the would have to ultimately pass Engineers Training School, to continue their career). I sent the list to H&R, and was surprised that my criteria didn't match H&R's. Of the 32, two were hired, neither lasted the year. Still don't know what H&R was looking for, but obviously, we were not on the same page. (FWIW, I recommended all but three for further consideration. The two hired were ranked about halfway down my list.)
Like the "Sale" table at the book store.
Sherrel: Today In History. In 1963 Symbol Freight Train TH1, (Chester Pa - Harrisburg PA) wrecked along the main track(s), at West Elkton, MD, just South of the US 40 bridge, due to a burnt off journal.

Afternoon All,

Spent the morning doing all the chores normally spread out over the week since I'm at the school book fair all week (M-F). Afterwards we met with Dad's landlords and turned over keys and garage remotes. I guess their plan now is to sell the house. They were very happy with the house condition. Mom and Dad rented there for 12 years and the lady actually cried when we parted. They were excellent landlords.

Toot- Interesting photos.

Garry- Just take care of yourself. That's what is important.

Terry- I wish you the best.

Willie- Nice job with the details.

Guy- That box car looks well used.

Jerry- Interesting photo.

Joe- More neat photos.

I hope everyone has a good night.

Was feeling down. Played golf with my friend up north. He suffered a stroke 14 months ago. Was tough on me to see how degraded he is. But the good news he was out and wanted to play and could play some. But maybe you know what I mean. It was tough. Continuing to improve with PT.
.
Steve, Kudos to your friend! With lots of PT I can swing a club again after my stroke, and can even out drive 18 year old son #4. My one leg still has some residual movement issues so I can't run anymore, but the upper body is all good! IF he has access to a Nintendo Wii, he should try the tennis and bowling games, they helped me!

Good Afternoon Everyone and Happy Trick or Treat time. Windy and cool here in this part of Wisconsin (lucky TomO being where its warm). Glad I'm not going out tonight Trick of Treating with the rest of the world. Our neighbors have an annual Halloween Party on their drive way tonight with a fire pit enclosure and of course refreshments while they hand out candy. We should be getting a telephone call from the neighbors with an invitation real soon.

I feel sorry for al those who have had job ownership changes. I when through many while at the same location and sitting at the same desk. Most of them were for the good, but there' always the first first months of wondering if they will keep me on or send what my "Golden Parachute" was at the time. The worst change for many was when we were purchased by a smaller national developer and our office staff was cut from 46 people down to 16. Many of those who were cut had the option to stay for three months during the transition. Real motivation to do a good job!!! But, the new GM was a person I knew years before during our college years and we hung out at the same hamburger joint and saw him at a local ski hill during the winters.

One night I was called to the office for an emergency and at mid-night while sitting at my desk, our ownership changed. After experience was after a ownership change, one month later we had a massive flooding due to surface water from a heavy thunderstorm that dumped 12 inches of rain in a short period. Over a million dollar lost due to water damage. Your truly had the responsibility for the repairs and dealing with the insurance companies and permitting with the City.

Now on to model railroading. Time to renew my subscription to TrainMasters Video series by Joe Fugate who is the publisher of Model Railroad Hobbyist. I find the videos interesting and recently there was a great video with Randy Decker, the modeler who is recreating John Allen's G&D Railroad. So far his progress is amazing and Randy is a very friendly modeler who I've emailed many times.

Tomorrow is my trip to the train room in the afternoon after lunch. The new graphite sticks arrived and I'll try the newer method of maintaining a clean track for DCC users. With the graphite, it's a recommendation to use Track Magic as a rail cleaner. Many users have said this is an excellent means to keep their track clean and free of crud. Like Willie said I'll find the graphite sticks I misplaced tomorrow.

Just renewed my subscription to Model Railroader for another year.

Garry, glad to heard you're back at home. Take it easy and soon you'll be back to being yourself. I miss the photos of your layout.

Hard to believe it's early fall and the end of October. Time for many of us to spend the winter in the basement playing with trains.

Cathy is going to Arizona next week and I'll need to puppy sit for Riley. I can't go down to the train room with Riley upstairs so I'll do some kit building at the kitchen table. Riley can't be 100% trusted as of yet, but she is maturing into a real nice adult dog. I know Riley will miss her Mom and Number One Master. It will be also a great time for my to start my tax worksheets for my expenses during 2021.

Going to watch some model railroading videos until Trick of Treat time arrives.

That's all for now................

Later.

Greg

Under layout wiring for signal animators on the CM&N Railroad. I used telephone Com. wiring for a lot of the wiring. I like using terminal strips for much of my layout wiring to make changes or for easy trouble shooting should the need arise. The terminal strip in the upper right hand corner is for future wiring and is 9 volts (should be label to avoid testing). The CM&N Railroad has many separate buss strips, one for DCC, lighting, LED lighting, LED signals and for the Tortoise switch machines.-Greg

Actually I did find it on Amazon, though now as an import and quite expensive. In 2009 when I bought it again on Amazon it was under $14

The original copy I had back in the 80s had a totally different cover but the inside was the same (except this new edition may have had some edits to fix whatever errors were in it). Book is to be recommended for those interested in WW2 era aircraft.
